movie review: In A Better World

In a Better World triumphed against strong competition to win this year’s Academy Award as Best Foreign Language Film. Now that it’s opening theatrically in the U.S. you can see why. I became a fan and booster of Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier when I saw her breathtaking Brothers (which is far superior to its Hollywood remake). Her films have a rare feeling of intimacy; there is no distance between us and the characters on screen. We almost feel as if we’re experiencing the story in their shoes. Bier and her screenwriting partner Anders Thomas Jensen create tapestries with multiple story…»

Two New Attack The Block Clips Land

Joe Cornish's feature length debut, Attack The Block, has been getting such good buzz it's almost unbelievable. So to get you guys even more excited, here are two brand new clips for you. You know, because we're nice like that. For those not in the know, Attack The Block sees a group of kids from south London stumble upon an alien that's crashed landed, meteor-style, into their block. They promptly kill it (see clip one) and drag its carcass around town to show everyone. Then, of course, other aliens start arriving and things start getting a little bit scary. Retreating to the block (see clip two) they are chased and attacked by these other aliens, with only baseball bats, knives, bangers and the odd samurai sword to defend themselves. You might expect Attack The Block to be a comedy of sorts, what with it being from Joe of Adam And Joe fame,»

Selling point: Spock's ear to be auctioned

Star Trek prop worn by Leonard Nimoy expected to fetch Ј700 at Hollywood memorabilia auction

Framed above the fireplace or simply sported by its owner, this is one movie collectable that would be a guaranteed conversation starter. One of the ears worn by Leonard Nimoy as Mr Spock in the 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture is to be auctioned tomorrow.

The appendage, one of Spock's most recgonisable features, is part of a pair acquired from the prop master on the film, and has been lovingly preserved.

"It was carefully wrapped up, which is important because silicone latex can deteriorate," a spokesman for the auctioneers, Premiere Props in Los Angeles, told the Daily Express.

"Spock's ears are an iconic part of Star Trek and fans across the world would love to own it – we've already had lots of bids," he said. Conservative estimates suggest the ear is likely to fetch around Ј700.

Two Clips From Russell Brand Easter Bunny Flick “Hop”

Russell Brand has charmed America. It’s pretty odd when you think about it. But never mind. The comic turned actor has already appeared in Julie Taymor’s The Tempest and next up is the obligatory animation part-animated Easter Bunny comedy, Hop, which is released today in the UK.

We’ve got two clips to show you from this comedy – brought to you by the dude who made Alvin and the Chipmunks. This is definitely one for the kids during the Easter break. Next up for Brand, after this one, is the remake of Arthur.

Synopsis:

Blending state-of-the-art animation with live action, Hop tells the comic tale of Fred (James Marsden), an out-of-work slacker who accidentally injures the Easter Bunny (voiced by Russell Brand) and must take him in as he recovers. As Fred struggles with the world’s worst houseguest, both will learn what it takes to finally grow up.»

Critic's Notebook: New Directors/New Films Shows Flawed Movies, For Good Reasons

Most film festival programmers will admit that you can't please everyone. At festivals large and small, the people responsible for the movies in their lineups smile at the podium and vouch for their choices, readily aware that the program's quality is anything but impeccable. However, New Directors/New Films doesn't face that problem; its very existence justifies the inclusion of flawed works, since the program is defined more by potential than »

British Film Institute Takes Over Funding From UK Film Council

It was a controversial decision made by the coalition government but the UK Film Council was dismantled with the British Film Institute taking over doling out funding to film-makers. Today is the official date that happens after eight months of campaigning to stop it.

Last summer at The A-Team press conference Liam Neeson voiced his annoyance at the government’s decision when he said:

“I haven’t quite formed my full opinion yet … I’m just giving my knee jerk reaction. But of all the things to tighten … what? To save seventeen dollars? It’s kind of shocking and it makes me worried about this government. Hopefully I’ll get more info and we’ll start a campaign.”

The transition from the UK Film Council to the BFI hasn’t caused too many problems. The producer of Berberian Sound Studio, a film currently filming in east London said:

Thor Meets Agent Coulsen – New Images Online

The marketing machine is up to full speed now on Marvel Studios’ big screen tale of gods and monsters, and barely a day seems to go by without some kind of godly update. Today we have two new stills from Thor, the first in this year’s Marvel movies which stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgеrd, Idris Elba and Rene Russo.

The two images feature stills previously seen in the trailer, the first is a meeting between our almighty hero and a familiar face, Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) who has featured in both Iron Man and Iron Man 2. Judging from the clips we’ve seen previously, the two are far from best buddies in the film. The second image features a mortal Thor, trying to reclaim his mighty hammer, Mjolnir. Good luck with that mate.

Take a look at both images after the synopsis:»

'Hobo With A Shotgun' Hits Video On Demand Today, And Here's An Exclusive Clip

Sometimes, the only thing you need to clean the crime-ridden city streets is one determined hobo with one incredibly reliable shotgun.

That's the case in the more than aptly titled "Hobo with a Shotgun," director Jason Eisener's big-screen adaptation of his widespread grindhouse trailer. Rutger Hauer stars in the blood-soaked old school throwback as the titular hobo, a drifter who comes into town with dreams of buying a lawnmower and cleaning the place one yard at a time. Fate, of course, has other plans for our hero — plans that are initiated one shell at a time.

"Hobo" arrives on On Demand platforms nationwide today (April 1), and to mark the occasion, we've got an Exclusive clip for your viewing pleasure!

In this scene, the hobo finds himself locked in a police station's interrogation room after he rescues a prostitute from certain doom at the hands of Slick, the eldest of two sons of The Drake,»

Friday, Friday, Time for a Body-Switching Mashup on Friday

In the just-released movie "Source Code," Jake Gyllenhaal wakes up on a train to find out that his consciousness has been transferred into another person's body. What he may not realize is that he's part of a long and glorious Hollywood tradition dating back more than 20 years.

Why the two-people-magically-switching-bodies theme has been such a persistent one in the movie world, we're not quite sure - it's not like "18 Again" broke the bank at the box office. Whatever the cause, a surprisingly large number of actors have had to follow the direction, "Now, look into the mirror and realize that you're not looking back at your own face."

You know the moment: The character stares, slack-jawed, reaches up to feel his or her features (now, so foreign), and then more than likely screams in either a comedic or horrific manner, depending on the context. It's a scene that has played»

Would You Like to See Zack Snyder Replaced as Director of 'Superman'?

For the record, my answer to the question posed in the headline is... No. The reason I'm asking this question is because a pair of articles over at The Guardian and MTV contemplate the possibility of such a scenario. Personally, I think Snyder is the right director to give the Superman franchise the kick in the pants it needs, a jolt of energy it's been missing... that is, as long as he can tone down the number of slo-mo shots and simmer a bit on the in-movie music video sequences. You know, go back to the days of Dawn of the Dead.

Ben Child at The Guardian is certainly the harshest on Snyder, opening his article saying, "Can one film ruin a career? Maybe it can, if that film is Sucker Punch." He then adds, "Speculation has been rife this week that Zack Snyder might find himself out of the»

5 Other Best Picture Winners Downgraded to PG-13

In an effort to capitalize on its recent Best Picture triumph at the Oscars, the makers behind "The King's Speech" are releasing a stripped-down, "family-friendly" version of the movie, rated PG-13.

Among the edit casualties: A string of obscenities rattled off by Colin Firth's stammering-conquering monarch that includes plentiful f-bombs and the memorable closer "and tits," in a scene that counts as, oh, just the film's single funniest.

It's a bold move, altering an award-winning film so that the 13-16 crowd can join in the fun (as if 13- and 16-year-olds who wanted to see the film in the first place were deterred by that R rating).

It's also a move we're glad hasn't happened very often in Hollywood before, especially with Best Picture winners. Because this folks, is what they might've looked like…

Susanne Bier Considers "A Better World"

In recent days, many people have thrown around the word "accessible" in writing about Susanne Bier's work, a description that has no doubt has led to Hollywood interest in remaking at least two of the Danish filmmaker's previous films including the already-produced Jim Sheridan take on "Brothers." For some, it's been a compliment and others, a curse - Bier deals in direct terms with her audience and while she tells stories that are easy to digest, it's because they're undeniably about the human condition.

Bier's win for this year's Best Foreign Language Film at this year's Oscar for "In a Better World" was yet another confirmation that she's working on a global stage, yet it's long been evident from her films that it's been a goal to cut across borders. In her latest film, she achieves the near-impossible with a parable about violence that spans from the small scale»

In the Gary Ross-directed adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novel trilogy, Gale is the hunting partner of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), and Peeta is the baker's son chosen to accompany her as the district's entry into the deadly Hunger Games reality show competition. Both have been hotly contested roles among young actors, as was Katniss before Lawrence got the job. Both of these guys look right for the respective parts. Chloe Mortez Joins Tim Burton's Dark Shadows

In what may be considered a consolation prize, Chloл Moretz has join the cast of Tim Burton's upcoming Dark Shadows remake.

Mortez was said to be a lead contender (along with True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld) for the role of Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming The Hunger Games adaption until Jennifer Lawrence was ultimately cast in the role.

But we shouldn't weep for Mortez, since she is starring in a Burton/Johnny Depp production about vampires (the duo's last outing — Alice in Wonderland — made over $1B at the box office and vampires are currently red hot).

Win Win is easily one of the best-reviewed films of 2011.  The film’s success is especially impressive, given that it rests so heavily on the performance of a teenager whose only prior acting experience came in a high school class and a small role in his 6th grade production of The Pirates of Penzance.  17-year-old Alex Shaffer delivers a strikingly assured film debut opposite three Oscar nominees: (Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan and Burt Young), an Emmy winner (Bobby Cannavale) and a 6-time Emmy nominee (Jeffrey Tambor).  Luckily for the film, which continues its national rollout this weekend in a host of new cities and theaters, Alex wasn’t phased.Shaffer filled Collider in on how much his life has changed since he went to the fateful audition that he had to be hassled into attending by a friend.  Hit the jump for the audio and transcript of our lively exchange,»

'Hunger Games' Casting Rumors, Lily Collins as Snow White and Renner for 'Bourne'?

We've reported on the supposed "shortlist" of actors being considered to replace Matt Damon in The Bourne Legacy, and Latino Review exclusively revealed that the offer is about to go out to Jeremy Renner (who wasn't even on the the list). This would be just one more notch in the belt of Jeremy Renner, who has secured his current "that guy" status. Already with roles in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, The Avengers and Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (set pics of that one here), we'll be seeing plenty of Renner over the next couple of years. I do think Renner is a good choice, but can he really be considered the "future" of two huge spy franchises at the same time?

It should be noted that shortlist contender Oscar Isaac (Robin Hood, Sucker Punch) was writer/director Tony Gilroy's first choice,»

My Favorite Comedy Movie: Rose Byrne

"'Tootsie' is a classic. It's just fantastic.

"I'd never seen anything like 'Tootsie' before. It was sort of the first of its kind. It's so heartwarming and so funny as well and the setting in the soap world. There's something about the character that Dustin Hoffman brings that's so convincing and so hilarious and dark.

"It is both drama and comedy. Drama teachers will say it's the same mask or something pretentious like that but it is really true: from great drama comes great comedy."

Rose Byrne stars in "Insidious" in theaters now and has "Bridesmaids" and "X-Men: First Class" arriving in theaters in the next few months.

Oranges and Sunshine – review

Jim Loach's debut is a powerful, deeply moving, understated account of a major social injustice that went unreported for many years and only this past year received an official apology from the two governments involved, those of Great Britain and Australia. The picture is seen almost entirely from the point of view of a Nottingham social worker, Margaret Humphreys (a luminous performance of undemonstrative decency from Emily Watson), who stumbled across the story of 130,000 working-class British children separated from their families and siblings and sent to Australia between the end of the second world war and the early 1970s. Some were orphans, some weren't. Scarcely any record was kept of their enforced deportation, and no one appears to have investigated their Dickensian treatment – especially the way they were subjected to battery, buggery and the breaking of the spirit at the hands of the Christian Brothers into whose hands the»

The god in Idris Elba

With a mother from Ghana and a father from Sierra Leone, Idris Elba was brought up in east London before finding fame in America. As he takes his place in Kenneth Branagh's Thor, we send Afua Hirsch, half-Ghanaian herself, to unpick this most modern of British actors

Idris Elba wants to know, on a scale of one to 10, how intimidating I find him in person. "Do you think I'm terrifying?" he asks. "I always wondered about that."

It's a glorious spring afternoon in south London's leafy Richmond and we are lounging in sunlight in an old-fashioned hotel bar. Elba, who is sitting sideways on the sofa opposite me, has moulded his tall frame into the cushions and is chuckling with a gruff laugh. He needs a shave – there are speckles of grey in his stubble – but other than that the 38-year-old is instantly recognisable.

How you would recognise him depends on your TV sensibilities.»

Primarily because I didn't think there was anything to interpret.

Loving the prospect of a good discussion and curious to see what people were saying, I took to the web, genuinely interested in reading what possibilities I was overlooking.

However, before we dig into any interpretations let's remind ourselves of what we're discussing. Obviously, if you haven't seen the film yet you're entering massive spoiler territory. Despite the star pedigree of Jake Gyllenhaal and the geek cred of director Duncan Jones, sci-fi thriller Source Code was topped by an animated bunny learning the new true meaning of Christmas Easter. Skaar wore a Vera Wang dress with an Oscar de la Renta belt, and we kinda love the fact that the new couple apparently danced their first dance to Sigur Ros! Mazel Tov, you two.

Britain's tough new actresses look to redefine our heroines

Forget the niceties of period drama, the next generation of cinema starlets are rough and ready for the big time

A cut-glass accent and the ability to look good in a bonnet used to be a must for young British actresses looking to secure their careers. Nowadays, however, such skills are more of a hindrance. As the recent array of debut performances from tough-talking teenagers shows, directors and producers are increasingly looking for starlets who are more at home in a hoodie than a horse-drawn carriage.

One of the stars of last January's Sundance festival was 19-year-old Londoner Yasmin Paige, who plays an unconventional heroine in the dark comedy Submarine, director Richard Ayoade's film version of Joe Dunthorne's novel. Paige plays Jordana, a Welsh teenager with a penchant for setting fire to things.

New Still Images from Thor in HD

Paramount has released fourteen new HD-quality still images from Academy Award-nominated director Kenneth Branagh's (Hamlet) Thor, the upcoming live-action adaptation of the classic Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby. Most of the scenes these stills are from have already been shown in the various trailers and clips that have been released, but they offer a detailed look at the incredible costumes, sets and VFX that Marvel Studios luxuriously poured into this movie. The best of the bunch are an awesome shot of Odin (Academy Award-winner Anthony Hopkins) blasting the petulant Thor (Chris Hemsworth) with his own hammer, and close-up shots of Heimdall (Idris Elba), Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Sif (Jaimie Alexander).

Next Showing: Thor opens May 6

Saoirse Ronan Talks Possibility Of Working With Joe Wright Again, Remains Cagey On 'Anna Karenina'

She might be a good half-decade off being able to drink legally, but Saoirse Ronan has already racked up an impressive array of performances in her career so far. What's more, she seems to know a good deal more about media management than actors three times her age--while a veteran like, say, Michael Caine is constantly thwarting Christopher Nolan's plans for secrecy, Ronan knows how to run rings around the press when it comes to rumors. She's already come out with a firm refusal to confirm or deny just about anything about her rumored presence in "The Hobbit," and when…»

Preview of our Dolphin Tale Set Visit; Plus First Images

So many set visit offers start the same way. “Would you like to go to Florida to see the set of Charles Martin Smith’s Dolphin Tale? It stars Ashely Judd and Morgan Freeman, and you may get to talk to all three.” How does one say no? One doesn’t. I was sent with a handful of online journalists to go on set and meet its stars. The film is based on the true story of Winter, a dolphin who lost most of her tail in a crab trap. She was considered a lost cause until a doctor (played in the film by Morgan Freeman) invented a prosthetic tail for her. The film is currently set to be released September 23, 2011. We’ll have interviews with Charles Martin Smith, Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman, and more once the embargo lifts, but until then I can tell you what the set was like.»

PG-13 ‘The King’s Speech’ Fails To Make Box Office Impact

When The Weinstein Company decided to edit the cursing [1] out of Tom Hooper's Oscar-winning film [2] The King's Speech, they felt the new family-friendly PG-13 rating would help them draw even more money out of their little film that could [3]. Well amid controversy [4] over the artistic merits of such a chop job, audiences have spoken. Last weekend, when The King's Speech was still rated R, it pulled in about $2.2 million, good for 13th place. This weekend, the new PG-13 version pulled in, according to early estimates, only $1.2 million, dropping to 14th place.Does this mean the Weinstein's experiment failed? Or was it simply too late in the game to change a film that had already made over $130 million? Read more after the jump.If you look strictly at the box office receipts, the new PG-13 rating, complete with totally new marketing campaign touting The King's Speech as a family film,»

Dumb Governator Comic Will Also Be Dumb Movie, Good Luck With That

Larry King To Be A Recurring Character On The Cartoon Show Oh hey, so in case you forgot, Arnold Schwarzenegger's first project out of office is incredibly lame sounding "The Governator." First announced last week, the brewing franchise (seriously) will span comic books and television with Arnie reimagined as a crime-fighting former politician (sigh) who has his own Bat-cave sort of thing under his mansion, is assisted by a techie security guy named Zeke Muckerberg and squares off against Gangsters Imposters Racketeers Liars & Irredeemable Ex-cons (or G.I.R.L.I.E. Men, for short). It sounds like Stan Lee, who is helping develop…»

Tony Kaye's 'Detachment' With Adrien Brody, Christina Hendricks & More Added To Tribeca Lineup

Kings Of Leon Documentary Also Added Over a decade into his career, Tony Kaye is likely still wondering what it feels like to shoot a movie, edit it and then release it easily into theaters, no fuss no muss. "American History X" found him battling with Edward Norton over the cut of the film. He would return eight years later with "Lake Of Fire," a documentary about abortion that no one saw. Then there's the New Orleans thriller "Black Water Transit" starring Laurence Fishburne, Karl Urban and Brittany Snow that is still presumably being haggled over in the mess that…»

Jeremy Renner Taking Over Bourne And Mission: Impossible?

Hollywood practically ignored Jeremy Renner for the near-decade between his amazing turn in Dahmer and his Oscar-nominated Hurt Locker performance, but they seem to be making up for lost time. Despite the fact that he’s already filming a new Mission: Impossible film with Tom Cruise, Latino Review says Renner is Universal’s top choice to star in The Bourne Legacy, where he’d not so much replace Matt Damon as Jason Bourne but play another secret agent undergoing a rather Bourney predicament (far younger actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Garrett Hedlund were previously rumored for the role). Could the 40-year-old Renner really take over two of the biggest action franchises? If this guy can rock a British accent, Daniel Craig better watch his back!

Whether or not he gets the Bourne gig (shouldn’t they get someone who isn’t Matt’s age?), Renner has plenty of action cash coming»
