This week's new films

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (12A)

(Rob Marshall, 2011, Us) Johnny Depp, Penйlope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush, Sam Claflin. 137 mins

Ahoy! Aha! Ahem. The excitement of another rip-roaring high seas adventure dissipates almost before they set sail in this lightweight epic of action set-pieces and people trying to get stuff they want. Depp is business as usual and the presentation is classy, but the new blood brings little to this non-party, which feels less like a story than a succession of twists and swoops along well-established tracks – like a theme-park ride, in fact. Oh, hang on …

Win Win (15)

(Tom McCarthy, 2011, Us) Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, Bobby Cannavale. 106 mins

Giamatti's hard-up lawyer inherits a whole heap of surrogate family issues, and a teen high-school wrestling ace, in a wry drama that doesn't really stray out of its suburban comfort zone.

Julia's Eyes (15)

(Guillem Morales, 2010, Spa) Belйn Rueda, Lluнs Homar,»

I've not seen The Hangover Part II yet but I'll bet Bridesmaids is funnier

With plum roles for women and an equal commitment to gross-out, Kristen Wiig's movie will be a great Hangover cure

If you're in the market for a fantastically dark gross-out black comedy about clueless young Americans trapped in a never-ending nightmare in south-east Asia, skip The Hangover Part II and just watch Apocalypse Now, reissued this week for the umpteenth time. I'm out of town this week so I've yet to see Hangover II, though I imagine there's a worldwide embargo on pre-release glimpses of its priceless shit jokes and fart oratorios, lest one dime of its projected mega profits be lost to piracy or to unfounded rumours of comedic inadequacy.

The latter, as it happens, has long been my biggest problem with the Todd Phillips oeuvre. My main memories of his last three R-rated comedies – Old School, The Hangover, and Due Date – are of wall-to-wall ads in the month preceding release,»

“This Is Not A Film” And More: Iranian Cinema At The Cannes Film Festival

When is a film not a film? In one of the triumphs of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the remarkable documentary This is Not A Film, by Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, asks this question and more as it portrays, diary-like, a day in Panahi’s life awaiting trial at his home in Tehran. Panahi talks on the phone with friends, illustrates with tape the boundaries of a future film set, chats with a garbage man who has just earned his Masters degree, and is kept company by his daughter’s free-roaming and giant pet lizard, Igi. If one is forbidden by law to make movies for 20 years, if one but sits in front of another’s camera, if one merely reads a vivid script aloud, does a word like “director” still have meaning?

Warner Brothers on Friday kicked off the viral campaign for Chris Nolan's Batman threequel The Dark Knight Rises. Art Linson's 'The Comedian' Set For Another Robert De Niro & Martin Scorsese Reunion?

Is Robert De Niro set to return to the comedy world with regular collaborator Martin Scorsese? After their twisted exploration of Rupert Pupkin in "The King Of Comedy," De Niro is reportedly interested in a script by producer Art Linson called "The Comedian" which follows the exploits of an insult comic described as Don Rickles meets Joan Rivers, with Scorsese being eyed as the man to helm. It certainly sounds like a fascinating prospect with the role noted to be "a serious role with Oscar potential" for the actor and one "quite different than Rupert Pupkin" with stand-up aspects of…»

Cannes Interview: Nanni Moretti Takes On The Vatican and Woody Allen

With Cannes competition entry Habemus Papum, Italian writer-actor-director Nanni Moretti, much like The Queen or The King' Speech, takes us behind the scenes of a place that we are forbidden to enter. He imagines what would happen if a Pope finds out that he has been elected as supreme religious leader, panics and rejects the job. Great French actor Michel Piccolli plays this Pope. And typically, Moretti is in the mix as an atheist therapist sent in to talk the new Pope into accepting God's will. (So far Cannes reviews are mixed.) The movie starts out very funny and then loses its way; I wanted more dialogue (King's Speech-style) between the shrink and the Pope. Hearing the Pope spout psychobabble about separating from his mother »

Ariang And Stopped On Track Tie For The Top Of Un Certain Regard In Cannes

In the special category of Un Certain Regard, Arirang and Halt Auf Freier Strecke (Stopped On Track) tied for the top prize. Elsewhere, the Special Jury Prize went to Elena and directing prize went to Mohammad Rasoulof for Be Omid E Didar (Au Revoir). It's a bittersweet consolation for Rasoulouf, who, along with director Jafar Panahi, was sentenced to a six-year jail term by the Tehran government for "propagandizing against the regime." Iron Man 2 to Shrek Forever After: Last May's ClusterFlick Challenge

Today's Challenge: The two highest grossing movies last May were Iron Man 2 and Shrek Forever After. Can you find a link between these 2010 blockbusters?

Our first Facebook movie game, ClusterFlick, plays off that old "six degrees of separation" theory — you know, the one that has a certain Kevin at the center of the Hollywood universe. It's easy to play, but not so easy to win. The goal is to use the major cast of movies to get from Point A to Point B in the smallest number of moves.

Weekend Receipts: Pirates A Bit At Sea While Bridesmaids Stays Strong

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides plundered a hair over $90 million this weekend, but thanks to Hollywood expectations and arithmetic, it's a bit of disappointing haul for Depp and his crew. Previous Pirates installments were able to pull in higher debuts, and that was without the benefit of higher ticket prices and 3-D screenings. But Bridesmaids retained the second spot, barely depreciating at all from last week. Sisters are doing it for themselves! And by it, I mean pooping on themselves. Your weekend receipts are here.»

Cannes Closing Night: Poliss Wins Jury Prize, Screenplay to Footnote, Dunst Actress, Refn Director

"Wow what a week it's been," said Kirsten Dunst as she accepted her Best Actress prize for Melancholia. "Thank you so much. It's a once in a lifetime thing. Thank you to the festival for letting the film still be in competition. Thank Lars for giving me the opportunity to be so brave. It's such a special night for me." Nicolas Winding Refn wins the director prize for Drive, amid huge applause in the house and the press room. He thanks Gaspar Noe for teaching him how to smash heads and Ryan Golsing (amid cheers) who wanted him to direct the film. I had heard the Joseph Cedar had been asked to return to Cannes to accept a prize. He didn't make it in time »

Michael Andrews To Score Jason Segel & Emily Blunt Romance 'Five Year Engagement'

He may not be a familiar name like Mark Mothersbaugh or Jon Brion, but Michael Andrews is quickly rising into a similar status. He has composed for a number of notable films including “Donnie Darko,” Miranda July's “Me and You and Everyone We Know,” "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," “Cyrus,” “Funny People” and most recently, "Bridesmaids." He most certainly got to know both Judd Apatow and Paul Feig back in the day when he lent his skills to both “Undeclared” and “Freaks and Geeks,” and he's set to reteam with the Apatow fold on yet another project. Andy Dick Sued For Rubbing Genitals On Comedy Club Attendee

Considering how many people have been fondled by Andy Dick without consent and exposed to his genitals, it’s a little ironic the comedian’s being sued by someone who actually paid to see him. But yes, a man who went to a Dick show in Dallas late last year wants damages after the Celebrity Rehab regular whipped out his Dick-and-Andys from under a dress and rubbed them on the poor guy’s face. By the way—the fellow disappointed by his encounter with Dick’s genitalia while Andy was dressed like a woman? His last name is Tucker. Dick vs. Tucker. Boom.

While we certainly wouldn’t want to be among Dick’s many molestees, and would likely feel “degraded and humiliated” if we did somehow wind up with a cheek rub from Andy’s Dick, we’re a little intrigued by the victim’s claim that he’s»
