Put Down Your Flip Cam! UCLA's First Barbie Video Girl Film Festival
If Todd Haynes could make a Barbie Doll movie--Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (trailer below) broke him out at Sundance 1987, but was not cleared for theatrical release--why not UCLA film students? In a promo tie-in that would make Morgan Spurlock proud and may provide a replacement for grieving Flip Cam owners, Mattel challenged UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television (Tft) to use their Barbie Video Girl Doll™ to create two-minute short films. The competition rules were of the anything-goes variety: shooting with dolls was enough. On April 15, the films will be screened at the first annual (and free!) Lionsgate Acquires U.S. Rights To Barry Levinson Thriller 'The Bay'
Lionsgate picked up U.S. distribution rights to the Barry Levinson-directed eco-horror film The Bay from Alliance Films. Michael Wallach wrote the script, and among the producers is the Paranormal Activity team. The pic chronicles a biological disaster unleashed from the waters in Chesapeake Bay. It's an isopod parasite that carries an untreatable disease that jumps from fish to human hosts. ICM and CAA packaged the film.»
