More Images of Jennifer Lawrence in ‘The Hunger Games’

Yesterday we saw the first look [1] at Jennifer Lawrence in costume and hair dye as Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of the Gary Ross adaptation of the young adult novel The Hunger Games. Our first look was a medium shot of Katniss via the cover of Entertainment Weekly, and scans of additional photos from the magazine have now emerged. Check out two new views of the Jennifer Lawrence version of Katniss, after the break. These scans, like the first image, are from Entertainment Weekly [2], via The Film Stage [3].[gallery columns="2"]I can't offer much here, as I'm a total Hunger Games neophyte. These are obviously promo shots rather than frames of actual footage, so don't take any of the lighting or poses to mean much. Rather, these are intended to suggest what the costume will look like and that, yes the bow is very much present. The print edition of EW also offers:»

'Army Of Darkness' Gets A Video Game And 50 Cent Joins 'Odd Thomas' In This Week's Horror Bites

by Alison Nastasi

Oddballs and weirdos populate this week's Horror Bites. Some are living large (1,200 pounds to be exact), and others are blind as a bat, but Bruce Campbell (and his chin) remains horror's eternal hero and keeps things light with a new game to play.

50 Cent takes on Satan in a new based-on-the-book movie. The rapper/actor plays a blind DJ and will be starring alongside upcoming "Fright Night" actor Anton Yelchin for this tale originally penned by Dean Koontz.

An actor from "Robot Chicken" is gaining several hundred pounds for a role in David Arquette's "Glutton," which sounds like shades of David Fincher's creepy "Se7en." A family moves into a haunted house thanks to a "hauntrepreneur's" recommendation. Meanwhile, Freddy Krueger will be howling alongside strippers in a new movie that wins the award for most obvious film title ever.

Sean Penn’s This Must Be The Place Teaser Trailer Is Pure Oscar Bait

Wow, someone must want an Oscar real bad. Sean Penn’s This Must Be The Place teaser trailer has everything guaranteed to get the Academy out of their chairs and squealing. In case you haven’t heard of it before, it features Sean Penn as a faded rocker traveling to the U.S. to hunt down a Nazi..that tortured his father. So, as you can see, we’ve got your awkward art-house dialogue, a healthy dash of Nazi hunting a la Inglourious Basterds, and, if the trailer is any indication, more than a hint of Rain Main. More like a giant tub filled to the brim with Rain Man. The fact Frances McDormand is in it is merely icing on Penn’s “Congratulations On Your New Best Actor Award” cake. We mean really, did you see the dog at the bottom of the swimming pool at the very end of the clip?»

Universal Studios Orlando Re-Animating ‘Spider-Man’ Ride, Announces New ‘Despicable Me’ Ride

[1]Don't expect to see popular Marvel comics characters like Spider-Man at the Disney theme parks any time soon. That seems to be the core take-away from today's announcements from Universal Studios. The company made two announcements this morning: A Despicable Me 3D experience will replace the Jimmy Neutron attraction at Universal Studios Florida in 2012. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man at Universal’s Islands of Adventure will be fitted with all-new digital animation done in 4K high definition.By investing money to completely reanimate the Spider-Man ride, Universal is sending a clear message to theme park visitors: "we still own the rights to attractions based on some of the popular Marvel characters and you won't see these characters at the Disneyland theme parks any time soon." Trailer for 'Spy Kids 4' Introduces Pint-Sized Crimefighters Old and New

The "Spy Kids" franchise has always been a confusing one: what terrible parent would allow their tween children to be enlisted into a government spy agency and forced to combat amoral villains? That's horrible!

No matter -- director Robert Rodriguez has once again ventured into the world of butt-kicking youngsters in the name of wonderment and imagination with "Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World." The new installment abandons the original family in favor of a hot, new stepmom, Jessica Alba, and two kids, who discover that she's a secret agent.

The "Spy Kid" series has a great track record for squeezing in name talent, with the likes of George Clooney, Salma Hayek, Mike Judge, Richard Linklater, Bill Paxton and more popping up. "Spy Kids 4" continues the trend, with veterans Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara returning and comedian Ricky Gervais voicing a talking dog (obviously).

Broadway Spider-Man Re-Writer Tackles 'Glee' And 'Carrie' Remake

Exclusive: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the playwright and comic book writer who was brought on to rewrite and hopefully save Broadway's Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark, has booked several projects to follow. On the TV side, he'll become a co-producer and writer of the hit series Glee. And I'm told that he's just been set by MGM and Screen Gems to write a remake of Carrie, the Stephen King thriller about the telekinetic teenager who gets pushed too far at the prom and wreaks havoc on her fellow high school students. King's bestselling book was turned into the 1976 film that starred Sissy Spacek, John Travolta, Amy Irving and Piper Laurie as the repressive mother. For Aguirre-Sacasa, these diverse projects are right in his wheelhouse. On Carrie, he will write a version that is more faithful to the King book than the earlier movie, much the same as Joel and Ethan Coen went»

Cannes Review: 'Bonsai' Is A Chilean Slacker-Romance Of Love & Language That's Small, Swift & Smart

Cannes, more so than other film festivals, feels like the 10 days of nutrition offered in the hopeful attempt to make up for the other 355 days of dessert modern movie going offers us. Abandonment, murder, suicide, prostitution--these are the concerns of all too many films in the competition and sidebars here at Cannes. A film like Christiбn Jimйnez's "Bonsбi," in the Un Certain Regard selection--seemingly slight, seemingly light, small in scope and scene--is exactly the kind of film that whispers when other films shout and gets overlooked in the hue and cry. But that doesn't mean that it doesn't…»

Five Things to Look Forward to at the 2011 Seattle Film Festival

It would be easy to call the Seattle Film Festival a "best of fest," a collection of the world's most impressive films culled from nearly every festival that happened since the 36th edition of the festival ended last June. In purely relative terms, Seattle doesn't boast a ton of world premieres amongst the 441 films they'll show during the next 25 days, though Siff definitely has more than most other festivals half their size. Instead, they bring the world to their doorstep with an unparalleled array of international and regional cinema that makes it a rare and precious event unto itself. Unfortunately, I have just a weekend in Pacific Northwest, where I'll be reporting from over the next week, but given the amount of films we've already seen at other festivals, we can certainly make some recommendations for the fest, which kicks off tonight with a premiere of the drama "The First»

Mr. Popper's Penguins Trailer Has Jim Carrey Getting A Soccer Ball To The Nads

While I didn't watch tonight's season finale of The Office, I think it's pretty safe to say that Jim Carrey is not going to be Michael Scott's replacement as the new boss. Sure, he probably could do the job and do it well, but the fact of the matter is that he's a movie star that hasn't been on more than two episodes of a television show since 1994. Case in point, Mr. Popper's Penguins, which is due out this June. Full of family friendly fun, the movie will likely do well in theaters and why would he leave that all behind?MSN has posted the new trailer for the penguin-filled film and it actually shows off quite a bit of new footage. The story centers on Tom Popper, a successful business man who finds his world turned upside down when his explorer father sends him a package in the mail»

Cannes 2011 review: Drive

He won't race off with the Palme d'Or, but Nicolas Winding Refn's existential heist movie will go down in a blaze of glory

The mile-o-meter is ticking all the way back to the 1980s on Drive, an existential heist movie that doffs its cap to the back catalogues of Walter Hill, John Carpenter and Michael Mann. Directed with savvy aplomb by the Danish film-maker Nicolas Winding Refn, this plays out under cloudy La skies and thrums to a narcotic synth-pop soundtrack as it rides shotgun alongside an imperilled Hollywood stuntman. Buckle up; it's quite a ride.

Ryan Gosling stars as Driver, who flips cars for a living and occasionally moonlights as a getaway man for jewel thieves and bank robbers, offering them five minutes of his time, after which they're on their own. Driver, we soon come to realise, is an American riff on Jean-Pierre Melville's solitary samourai,»

Cannes 2011 diary: This must be the place to exit .. or is it?

Xan Brooks has witnessed the birth of the cosmos and the end of the world, but Drive gives his engine the boost he needs to get through to the end of the festival

Pity the poor Cannes casualty we spot across the street on the Rue d'Antibes, with his sunburnt brow and harried air, his press pass flapping like a noose around his neck. This idiot doesn't know where he's going; he's out of it; he's almost gone. There is a mirror in the window of the Cannes boutique. It takes a moment to twig that the idiot is me.

The festival is winding down in twists and turns. The Marchй is largely mothballed now and you can spy a smattering of empty seats in the morning screenings. But the films keep coming and won't stop until Sunday.

I decide that Drive is my guilty pleasure of this year's competition.»

‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins’ Trailer

Mr. Popper's Penguins is based on a well-liked kids' book, and so it shouldn't be any surprise at all that the first trailer for the film makes it look like a film that the kids will love (maybe?) and everyone else will doze through. Jim Carrey stars as an uptight New York businessman who is given a bunch of penguins, the better to teach him about living life to the fullest, or something along those lines. Check out the trailer, which comes complete with a Carrey/penguin performance of 'Ice Ice Baby,' after the break.Jim Carrey looks appropriately harried here; Carla Gugino does some Olympic-level frowning as his disapproving wife, and Clark Gregg, as a zookeeper who wants the penguins, looks more or less like S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Coulson in a different uniform. If you're not into the film but get stuck watching it anyway, just think of it»

First Glimpse Of Tom Hardy As Villain Bane From The Dark Knight Rises

Let the creepiness begin! Warner Bros. has released the first The Dark Knight Rises‘ Tom Hardy Bane photo, a glimpse at the terrifying masked villain that looks like he’ll do justice to the gritty, unsettling feel Heath Ledger established as The Joker in The Dark Knight. As if this wasn’t spooky enough, the Dark Knight Rises website is equally chilling: pitch black, with just an eerie soundtrack of Nazi-esque chanting. We don’t know about you, but we are dying to see how sunny, girl-next-door Anne Hathaway’s Selina Kyle is going to stack up against all this scariness. Video Clip: Michael Bay and James Cameron Talk 3D and ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’

Earlier this week, Peter attended an exclusive discussion called "3D: A Transforming Visual Art – A Conversation With Michael Bay and James Cameron." The point of the event was to discuss the use of 3D in Transformers: Dark of the Moon and how 3D in general has evolved over the last few years including, of course, the application in Avatar. However, according to Peter's write up [1], the interview wasn't strictly a love letter to the third dimension. It was much more realistic, open and critical of the medium. "Michael Bay was as honest as you can get, explaining how everything and anything can, and did, go wrong while shooting his movie with Cameron’s 3D camera rigs....Cameron was also honest, admitting that 3D filmmaking is still in the early stages, and it will only get better."For more info on the event, head over to Peter's write up [2] and watch»

Oranges and Sunshine wasn't just a false promise

In Jim Loach's film, the hope that young migrants would find a better life in the dominions is a cruel deception – but the reality of child migration was more complicated

According to its star, Emily Watson, Oranges and Sunshine is "about bearing witness to the terrible abuse of innocent children that could have gone without notice". This, then, is no mere mom-with-a-mission melodrama but a serious drama rooted in fact. Yet the nature of the scandal supposedly being laid bare goes mysteriously unexplored.

There's no doubt that bad things happened to many of the orphaned and otherwise disadvantaged children exported from Britain to the dominions between the 1600s and the 1960s. Within living memory, thousands were deposited on the other side of the world without their own or their parents' consent. Some were told that their parents were dead when they weren't. Many were subjected to gross abuse.

How could this have happened?»

New Pirates Of The Caribbean Featurette

It's strange to think that the inspiration for the multi-gajillion-dollar franchise that is Pirates was a once-creaky ride tucked away in a corner of Disney World's Magic Kingdom. Perhaps if the queues had been a little longer the day Jerry Bruckheimer visited, we'd now be eagerly awaiting the next instalment of Swiss Family Treehouse 3D or Big Thunder Mountain 4: Mountains Will Thunder.Forgive the nostalgia trip but this new featurette for Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has made us come over all wobbly. There's even a cameo from Walt himself to remind us where it all started. But where will it end? Well, judging by the treasure chest of trailers, posters and character shots we've seen so far, with plenty of swashbuckling, a spot of yo-ho-ho'ing and several barrels of rum. These will be firmly in the possession of Cap'n Jack himself (Johnny Depp) and dad Captain»

After Seventeen Years, We Still Miss Kurt Cobain

It’s not really an exaggeration to say hearing the news of Kurt Cobain‘s death is the Generation X version of “Where were you when John F. Review: 'Your Highness' Is Fantasy That's Gloriously Absurd, Hilarious & Balls-Out Irreverent

The potential failure of something calling itself "Your Highness" and being marketed, in the most blatant of terms, as a medieval stoner movie, is fairly, er, high. These are untapped waters, and a fairly ballsy decision for Universal, after several big-budgeted near-bombs, to make a big budget, very-r-rated comedy that riffs on the esoteric spate of sword-and-sorcery movies from the 1980s (like Playlist favorite "Krull"). In short: it could have been truly, eye-rollingly awful. But thankfully, the playful, irreverent spirit, gutbusting crudeness and general go-for-broke-ness that the cast and crew--led by director David Gordon Green--approach the material has turned, as…»

Your Highness opens April 8 with Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel (trailer below). Pineapple Express's David Gordon Green directs. The script comes from McBride and his Eastbound & Down co-writer Ben Best. This amiable, noisy action comedy basically gets its laughs by adding contemporary swear words to your standard British period quest adventure. Franco makes a fine straight romantic hero, with Deschanel as his lovely intended, kidnapped by Justin Theroux's evil, lusty wizard--by far the best performance of the lot. McBride is occasionally amusing as Franco's bumbling black sheep brother, who is forced by their father the King (Charles Dance) to earn his manhood by joining the crown prince's quest to save his bride. Sing a Song of "Sworcery"

Part of what's captivated the hundreds of thousands of people who've played through "Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery Ep" has been Jim Guthrie's haunting and picaresque music and sound design. The 8-bit action/RPG evokes a sense of mystery mostly due the lo-fi tonalities the indie stalwart was able to craft. As previously noted, Guthrie used a long-gone PS1 to make the game's music. It's fitting and not just because the end result went back into a video game. Keanu Reeves Updates Progress on Bill & Ted 3 and 47 Ronin

Keanu Reeves has been talking about a third Bill & Ted movie since last September, when he revealed that screenwriters Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon were "going to try and see if they can write something" worthy of a sequel.

In January, Reeves said the sequel would see Theodore "Ted" Logan (Reeves) and Bill S. Preston, Esq. (Alex Winter) still trying to save the world in the present day with "a lot of time-traveling" involved.

In a recent interview with MTV, Reeves revealed that a Bill & Ted 3 script was "six weeks away" from completion, adding: "No pressure, guys!"

Watch Fan-Made ‘X-Men: First Class’ Opening Credits

The '60s setting of X-Men: First Class has offered some great opportunities for visual design. Some of the film's sets and costumes really seem to go to town with the visual signifiers of the time period, and there have been other nods to the early '60s in vintage-style magazine covers and fan-made posters. Now check out this fan-made opening credits sequence, which uses well-known design ideas from Saul Bass and various James Bond credit sequence designers to condense the basic ideas of the characters and the time period in which the story takes place. Here's some info from the Vimeo [1] page:Set during the midst of the Cuba Missile Crisis, X-Men: First Class tells the story of the first team coming together, before they would become the heroes and villains we know from the original X-Men Trilogy. This sequence was designed to give a very brief primer on the time period,»

Inhale 6 Hilarious Clips from 'Your Highness'

Comedic takes on Medieval times have worked out pretty well for Hollywood, with enduring classics like "The Princess Bride"  and "Robin Hood: Men in Tights" still relevant today.

It's been a while since a great one, though, so thank goodness that the latest stoner-take on armor-clad times, "Your Highness," is finally here.

The movie stars funnymen Danny McBride and James Franco as brothers Thadeous and Fabious, respectively, who embark on an epic quest to save Fabious' maiden Belladonna (played by hipster-queen Zooey Deschanel) with some help from the cutthroat archer Isabel (a non-psychotic Natalie Portman).

In other words, imagine "Pineapple Express" set in the 14th century. Get a taste of "Highness" with these six funny clips from the film.

1. Fabious gushes about his profound, frozen-tear love for Belladonna to his traveling companions. Dude, get a hold of yourself.

2. Isabel expresses her desires to wear the skins of those who avenged»

Meg Ryan Heads Into The Beautiful

Meg Ryan’s acting career hasn’t exactly been firing on all thrusters recently, so it’s understandable that she might want to take a crack at some other creative outlet. Like many actors before her, she’s decided that she really wants to direct, and will make her debut with Into The Beautiful. Not much is known about Cavedweller writer Anne Meredith’s latest script, except that it apparently focuses on a Big Chill-style reunion of old friends."I'm often drawn to pictures that make you laugh and cry," producer Wendy Finerman tells Variety. "I think this is the perfect project for Meg to bring to life. She's poignant and funny and heartfelt."While Ryan will be behind the camera for the movie, there are apparently no plans for her to step in front of it – she and Finerman will start casting shortly, and the cameras will crank this September in New York state.»

Addison Timlin Up For Odd Thomas

And now it would seem that Addison Timlin will be the girl to star alongside Anton Yelchin.Adapted from Dean Koontz’ novel, the supernatural thriller will find Yelchin as Thomas, a cook with clairvoyant powers who discovers that dark and dangerous forces are threatening his desert home town.Amongst those helping our hero figure out the threat is girlfriend Stormy Llewellyn, who will be played by Timlin if she locks in a deal. While she’s a fairly fresh face with just a few credits to her name – most notably playing Clive Owen’s daughter in Derailed and the most recent season of David Duchovny comedy drama Californication»

Stephen Daldry and Richard Curtis pick up Trash

Billy Elliot director and Four Weddings and a Funeral writer team up on contemporary thriller set in unnamed developing-world city

Stephen Daldry and Richard Curtis are teaming up to shoot a contemporary thriller set in the developing world in which three young boys uncover a terrible secret while searching through rubbish mounds, reports Variety (paywall).

Trash, which is based on the Andy Mulligan novel, is set in an unnamed city where teenagers Raphael, Gordo and Rat spend their time picking through litter in the hope of finding useful waste. One day they discover a leather bag whose contents will bring them into conflict with the brutal local police force as they find themselves unlikely whistleblowers in a city rife with corruption.

The project inevitably recalls the 2008 Oscar-winning British film Slumdog Millionaire, which also centred on opportunistic young boys living in a grubby developing-world metropolis. Daldry looks likely to direct from a Curtis screenplay,»

Bristol Palin Made Bank On Pregnancy Prevention Deal

Let’s for a second, take a moment to applaud the hypocrisy of it all. The Candie’s Foundation appointed Bristol Palin as their face for a teen pregnancy prevention campaign in 2009. Because clearly, she’s the poster child for it, right? This happened post Tripp’s birth, when Bristol was 18 years old. And it seems all this preventing talk has made the young mom a very rich lady. TMZ reports that Bristol made over $262,000 on the deal because she, “plays an important role by helping other teens understand the incredible challenges teen parents face, and encouraging them to wait until they are socially and financially independent to start their families.”

What. Firstly, she’s a teen mom. She has a baby. There was no prevention there! And now she’s getting money for saying don’t have babies? And then going on Dancing With The Stars. We’re not»

China goes wild for 3D porn film

Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy is a world first, with technology that hopes to revive an ailing industry. But it is unlikely to be seen in full in the mainland

It is being billed as the world's first 3D porn film, a movie so salacious that Chinese audiences are reportedly flocking from the mainland to more permissive Hong Kong for the chance to see an uncut version.

Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy will open in the former British protectorate and Taiwan next week. The Ј2m Cantonese language film is an ornate fantasy with high production values, set at the kinky court of Ming dynasty ancient China. It is ostensibly based on the classic Chinese erotic text, The Carnal Prayer Mat, and follows a young man as he befriends a duke and enters a world of royal orgies and other sexual peccadilloes. Meg Ryan turns director with new project Into the Beautiful

Actor will follow Drew Barrymore, Jodie Foster and Barbra Streisand behind the camera for new comedy-drama

Meg Ryan is to follow in the footsteps of Drew Barrymore, Jodie Foster and Barbra Streisand and join the ranks of actors-turned-directors.

Her debut behind the camera is called Into the Beautiful, and is a comedy-drama along the lines of "a contemporary Big Chill with longtime friends reconnecting", reports Variety. The script has been written by Anne Meredith and the producing team includes The Devil Wears Prada's Wendy Finerman, whose last credit was the beyond-the-grave romcom Ps I Love You.

Though Ryan is still a major Hollywood figure, her acting career is in something of a downturn – her most recent film of any consequence was 2008's The Women. Charlie Sheen Scores In Cleveland, Makes Crew Watch Apocalypse Now

It looks like the warlock may have clutched victory from the jaws of defeat. Charlie Sheen’s Cleveland show was successful enough to end with a standing ovation, less than week after the Violent Torpedo Of Truth tour’s Detroit debut ended in boos. As in Chicago, Sheen skipped the poetry and stuck to questions from the audience, trading shirts with a woman in the audience and showing off “goddesses” Natalie Kenly and Rachel Oberlin (a.k.a. porn star Bree Olson). Granted, walking out in his Indians shirt from the movie Major League was a good way to get the audience in his pocket.

While fans were pleased, more objective gawkers could see plenty of signs that Charlie’s far from over his demons. One bit from TMZ’s report most folks are leaving out of theirs is that the audience chanted “F— that bitch!” after Sheen complained about his ex-wife Denise Richards,»

Regal Rebels! Not So Fast, Film Moguls: Chain Threatens To Reduce Trailer Play Time For Colluding Quartet Of Studios

Exclusive: I've learned that Regal Cinemas has come up with a specific plan to fight that newest scheme by Fox, Sony, Warner Bros, and Universal to keep undermining movie theaters. This is all about that colluding quartet's plan going into effect as early as this month offering some major pics for a “premium” Video on Demand service on DirecTV at a price point of $30 only 8 weeks after the films' theatrical release. (The norm is 4 months.) When word about this inconveniently leaked out last week at CinemaCon, the recent Las Vegas convention of studios and exhibitors, theater owners publicly expressed "strong disappointment" but privately went completely batshit. Now I'm told Regal Cinemas has decided to take matters into its own hands. My intel is that the theater chain's marketing people have just begun warning the marketing teams of the colluding quartet of studios that it's not going to be business as usual from this point on.»

MPAA: Movie Piracy Downright Un-American

In a hearing held today by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee's Intellectual Property, Competition and the Internet Subcommittee on the negative impacts of movie content thieves, MPAA vice president Michael O'Leary made the battle against movie pirates sound downright patriotic. "The key foundation of American industry, the expectation that hard work and innovation is rewarded,  is imperiled when thieves, whether online or on the street, are allowed to steal America's creative products and enrich themselves along the way," he said. "Rampant theft of American intellectual property puts the livelihoods of the workers who invest time, energy and fortune to create the filmed entertainment enjoyed by millions at risk; to these men and women and their families, digital theft means declining incomes, lost jobs and reduced health and retirement benefits. We believe that rogue sites legislation, combined with the Administration's work with intermediaries and enforcement by the Ipr Center, will»

'Super 8': The Young Cast Reveal Plot Details, But Won't Say Who (Or What) Is Behind The Mystery

We don't know much about "Super 8," aside from teaser trailers and posters and such, but a lot of people will say that all the mystery surrouding the J.J. Abrams-directed, Steven Spielberg-produced summer flick have made it a must-see.

[Editor's Note: I'm one of them, and Kara is crazy. "The movie is about a group of six kids filming a zombie movie," Riley Griffiths told us of the "Super 8" plot. "And one night they’re filming in a train station and this car turns onto the tracks and there’s a head-on collision with the train.»

Producer Mark Canton Talks 300 Follow-Up (Formerly Titled) Xerxes; Will Zack Snyder Still Direct?

Before Zack Snyder became the director of Warner Bros.' Superman reboot, the director was talking about helming Xerxes, a sequel to his 2007 hit movie, 300. Like 300, Xerxes was to be based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller.

Snyder revealed last July that he and co-screenwriter Kurt Johnstad were using Miller's comic book frames for reference to write the screenplay while Miller worked on the graphic novel, and, in September, said that Xerxes would take place concurrently with the events depicted in 300.

In October, already attached to Superman, Snyder discussed the sea battles of Xerxes, and, recently, Snyder admitted to MTV that he and Johnstad had "finished the script," though he wasn't sure if he would be the one to direct it. "If I have time," said Snyder.

The latest Xerxes news comes from 300 producer Mark Canton, who told MTV that Xerxes is no longer Xerxes.

So with this week's DVD release of the hilarious I Love You, Phillip Morris (Lionsgate), here's some love advice that audiences of all stripes can take away from queer couples played by hetero movie stars:»

Casting Bits: Carrie-Anne Moss & Malcolm McDowell in ‘Silent Hill;’ Addison Timlin in ‘Odd Thomas;’ Thandie Newton in Tyler Perry’s ‘Good Deeds’

[1]The Silent Hill sequel, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, is shooting right now in Toronto, and keeps adding cast members as it does. Director Michael J. Bassett (Solomon Kane) already had Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harington starring, with Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean and Deborah Kara Unger reprising [2] their Silent Hill roles in some unknown capacity. Now a press release announces that the film also boasts Carrie-Ann Moss as Claudia Wolf and Malcolm McDowell as Leonard Wolf. In the video game Silent Hill 3, Claudia is a major character (modeled to look like Julianne Moore, actually) who sets a good chunk of the plot in motion, and isn't exactly a passive or sane presence. Read more about her here [3] (and about her father Leonard here [4]) but be warned of possible spoilers for the film. The header image for this article, by the way, is a new still of Adelaide Clemens and Kit Harinton in the film,»

Exclusive: Dick Cook & Jim Breyer Join Thomas Tull's Legendary Pictures Board

Silicon Valley venture capitalist and uber-investor Jim Breyer of Accel Partners was busy inking a $40 million investment in Thomas Tull's Legendary Pictures on the day that Forbes magazine recently interviewed him. The news had not previously been disclosed until the issue came out today. But I've learned that this is not a straight investment: instead, Breyer purchased the shares from a previous Legendary investor whose identity is being kept secret. Through this, Breyer, a longtime friend of Tull's, also joins the Legendary board. I've also learned so does Dick Cook, the former chairman of Walt Disney Studios. They join Joe Roth, the former Walt Disney and Fox movie boss turned producer, and others. The very popular Cook has been laying low since he was ousted from Disney though his movies Alice In Wonderland and Toy Story 3 were mega-earners for the Mouse House in 2010 and his Pirates Of The Caribbean»

Five Funny Documentaries About Stand-Up Comedians

With a new documentary about the life of Bill Hicks opening in New York City this weekend, it seemed like a good time to dig deeper into the world of documentaries about stand-up comedians. And, pending an thorough examination, this is what we found: there aren't a lot of good ones. Obviously there are plenty of concert films of stand-ups, just not a ton of docs about stand-ups, and most of the ones that do exist aren't very good. "American," which is smartly edited and constructed, is a fine exception. Here are five more:

"The Comedians of Comedy" (2005)

Directed by Michael Blieden

As "The Comedians of Comedy" opens, Patton Oswalt talks about one of the worst gigs of his life: Yuk-a-Buck Night, six comedians, six bucks, one comedy club. Places like that Yuk-a-Buck joint, with their lowest common denominator expectations and two drink minimums, are the reason Oswalt gathered together Brian Posehn,»

“Meek’S Cutoff” — A Hammer To Nail Review

(Meek’s Cutoff is being distributed by Oscilloscope Laboratories. It opens theatrically at the Film Forum in NYC on Wednesday, April 8, 2011. Click on the links to learn more. )

As much as I approve of Kelly Reichardt’s Meek’s Cutoff in every single way, I’ve been finding it incredibly difficult to write a review of it. Not that I don’t have anything worthwhile to say. It’s just that everything I’ve come up with so far sounds like film school pretension. Though term papers could — and hopefully will — be written about how Reichardt revises and revitalizes the traditional Western in her most ambitious production yet, I worry that this type of treatment will keep Meek’s Cutoff relegated to cinephile circles, when this is a perfect example of a vital American independent film that should be used to help broaden less adventurous viewers’ horizons.

Though Reichardt’s previous two features,»

Jon Favreau Fighting To Keep Aliens Of 'Cowboys & Aliens' Out Of Marketing Campaign

Talks About Importance Of Comic-Con, Film's Emphasis On Stars Over Effects These days, the marketing campaign for a big tentpole begins the day that the film is announced. Hell, for some projects--"Super 8," for instance--the announcement is part of the marketing campaign. It's a long, hard slog, particularly for a film not based on material familiar to the general public, and it's something that a smart filmmaker will bear in mind throughout the entire process. Jon Favreau's come to know this world very well over the last few years with his two "Iron Man" movies, and when we sat in…»

Charlie Sheen Wants Mila Kunis as Third Goddess; Lindsay Lohan May Star in Gotti Biopic; Eva Longoria Latest with Wardrobe Malfunction

ReelzChannel Celebrity Rundown

When Charlie Sheen took the stage in Columbus, Oh last night, the typical chants of "F**k Detroit!" were replaced by "Seven Gram Rocks!," in reference to his cocaine usage boast to ABC's Andrea Canning the their infamous sit-down interview. Later Sheen ripped off his shirt, which has happened now for three straight shows, and said he wants to make Black Swan star Mila Kunis his next goddess. "Here's the good news — my goddesses have already f**king approved her. She's pre-approved!"

Oscar Watch: Cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth Talks The Social Network

The Oscar-nominated cinematography on The Social Network is trickier than it looks. David Fincher and his long-time director of photography, Jeff Cronenweth worked within various constraints. Shot with the latest digital Red One camera, the film was low-budget for a studio film ($50 million), was aiming to achieve a level of virisimilitude about recognizable people, and was shooting guerilla-style on the Harvard campus, where the cameras had to get in and out fast. Cronenweth and I talked via Skype from the Los Angeles stage set of Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (exteriors were shot in Sweden, with more to come before the film wraps in March). He first met Fincher as a camera assistant to his father Jordan on the Madonna Oh Father »

'Choose' Movie Review

As you may know by now, I'm a big fan of the horror movie mash-up. If, for example, someone wants to combine Godzilla and The Blair Witch Project into one new-fangled yet old-fashioned genre cocktail, you can be sure to find me at the box office. (The resulting film was Cloverfield, by the way.) Unfortunately, more often than not, the "let's smash horror movie X into horror movie Y" impulse is governed not by creativity or enthusiasm, but by plain old simplistic greed. Case in point: the truly generic Choose, which mixes horror-style kills and network-level procedural junk into one ungainly concoction. Kudos to those who make it to the wonderfully stupid ending.A mean-spirited, witless, and howlingly amateurish»

Michael Jackson Trial Defense To Argue He Was Suicidal?

The prosecution in the Michael Jackson murder trial has consistently argued that Conrad Murray is guilty of criminal negligence and manslaughter for providing the singer with lethal quantities of the addictive anesthetic Propofol, and lying about it afterward. Apparently unable to argue against this, Murray’s lawyers have focused on the possibility Jackson delivered the overdose himself, whether by lining a juicebox with the drug or jabbing himself with a syringe. Though we knew they’d argue Jackson was exhausted from the This Is It rehearsals and addicted to Coca-Cola, one Murray’s lawyers suggested yesterday that the singer “took desperate measures that caused his death”—hinting Jackson may have been suicidal.

The comments came as part of a pre-trial request to see Mj’s financial records, which the judge quickly denied. “I’m not going to turn an involuntary manslaughter trial into some kind of an escapade in analysis»

Gwyneth Interviews Bff Jay-z About His Fabulous Taste

They always say you can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can’t pick your friends nose, because they already have a full-time employee who’s job is doing only that. Earlier today Gwyneth Paltrow interviewed Jay-z for her lifestyles site Goop, and immediately afterward Jay-z interviewed Gwyneth on his new man-goop site Life + Times. Jay-z and Gwyneth’s friendship has always been a thing of wonder, but this time they take it to a whole new level. In her interview, titled “Straight Outta Compton?”, the rap superstar tells his bestie that he’s “very surprised at your extensive knowledge of hip-hop songs. Particularly how you can sing ’90s hip-hip songs word for word. I can’t even do that!,” while Gwyneth reps Biggie Smalls over Tupac: “Biggie by miles.” Jay-z and Gwyn then wrote mash notes and had a pillow fight on 800-count Egyptian cotton sheets.»

Holding out for a 3D hero

If Hollywood wants to keep the 3D golden goose alive, it needs to hand the technology to film-makers with genuine innovation

When this newspaper reported last month that Baz Luhrmann was mulling over the possibility of shooting his version of F Scott Fitzgerald's famous tale of the gilded jazz age, The Great Gatsby, in 3D, there were snorts of derision. The whole business stank of studio interference, a product of the current Hollywood environment in which producers believe they can eke out an extra 20% in profits provided they can find some – any – excuse to film in 3D. The figures, up until recently, appeared to confirm the theory: movies shot in stereoscope have benefited from a sizable 3D bump, with three of 2010's top five films, Toy Story 3, Alice in Wonderland and Shrek Forever After being shot in the format.

The bad news is that Luhrmann wasn't kidding. Hollywood Reporter»

Video: Of Course Natalie Portman Looks Cool in This Sexy Sofia Coppola Dior Ad

It seems like Sofia Coppola's combination of hipster-chic and art house sensibilities should actually lend themselves well to commercials. For example, slap a car logo at the end of the first shot of Somewhere and voila: A singular, eye-catching and slightly subversive car commercial! Alas, this new, Dior ad follows in the steps of her previous one in that there's not much here besides pretty people looking pretty while spending time in a pretty place. Here, Natalie Portman and Alden Ehrenreich (Tetro) play seductive games while drenched in warm light. Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg croon in the background. Needless to say, It will likely alienate Coppola's detractors even more, but die-hard fans of Coppola or Portman's back should find plenty to love. »

Christopher McQuarrie May Adapt Anime Series 'Star Blazers' To Big Screen Feature

If the last few weeks are notable for anything in the film world, it's the emergence of two billionaire twentysomethings who look to be giving a much needed adrenaline shot to film financing. David Ellison, 28, and Megan Ellison, 25, are the children of Larry Ellison, the founder of Oracle, and the sixth-richest person in the world, and have seemingly been connected to every other announced project in 2011 so far. Their first major foray into film production was hugely successful; pairing up to back the modestly-budgeted Coen Brothers western "True Grit," they've seen their investment richly rewarded, with the…»

Getting animated: Who are the best and worst Simpson-ised celebrities?

Is there still a certain cachet attached to being a guest star on The Simpsons, or has it become just another tick box on the celebrity bucket list?

On Sunday, Russell Brand became the latest in a long line of celebrities to have appeared in The Simpsons. The dandy comedian joins an illustrious list of actors, musicians, authors and politicians who have been Simpson-ised during the show's 21-year history. Some have been great, some terrible and some – sadly, including Brand's own appearance – a little pointless.

In one of the best Simpsons episodes for a while, called Angry Dad: The Movie, Brand appears as himself at The Golden Globes where he hands out an award to Bart. He gets to make one tame joke about rehab but his appearance is overshadowed by his co-stars, Ricky Gervais and Halle Berry, not to mention a hilarious Pixar parody called The Condiments. There was»

Tom Hardy Talks Batman, Says He's Signed for 'Inception' Sequels

Without jinxing him, it seems like Christopher Nolan is the man to pay attention to in the world of film. We can't think of another filmmaker who has engendered as much goodwill, while living up to his creative promise, as Nolan has (though we're sure you'll be quick to contradict us, in the cruelest way possible, in the comments section). And because he has audiences wrapped around his finger, anytime we get a little bit of insight into his work, it feels like a very big deal.

Case in point: 'The Dark Knight Rises'' bad guy Tom Hardy recently appeared on Alan Carr's talk-show in the U.K., and in a few short minutes blew the minds of Nolan fans by revealing some updates on his villainous character in the new Caped Crusader film, and also surprisingly revealed that 'Inception' sequels have been discussed.»

Glenn Close Not Close to Playing Susan Boyle in Biopic

This is why it's hard to trust British tabloids.

Over the weekend, London's The Sun reported that Glenn Close has signed on to play spinster-turned-game-show-winner-turned-megastar-recording-artist Susan Boyle in a biopic. The tabloid reported Glenn said "aye" to the film and was even practicing Boyle's supposed catchphrase "bloody fantastic."

Not so.

USA Today actually contacted a rep for Close who shot down the story, telling the newspaper that it's "complete rubbish."

So bad news for those Boyle fanboys out there.
