Eva Mendes Wraps Herself In Red For Tribeca Last Night Premiere

Eva Mendes doesn’t get a lot of roles in serious pictures (not that we didn’t love her in The Spirit, The Other Guys and Bad Lieutenant: Port Of Call New Orleans), so we can’t blame her for dressing in earnest at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of Last Night last night, where her heavy red gown stood out from the playful party dresses and men without ties. Also attending the affair were everyone from Tribeca regulars Robert DeNiro and Liev Schrieber to rarer sights like Courtney Love and Dionne Warwick. See photos from the festival red carpet and the afterparty in the gallery below.

More Mysterious Tree Of Life Stills Appear Online

Source: FilmShaft - More Mysterious Tree Of Life Stills Appear Online

It's only a couple of weeks or so before Terrence Malick's long-awaited next feature film, The Tree Of Life, appears at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. After the UK release controversy - which is still in limbo - at least the film will finally be seen, if only by critics.

A few more stills have appeared from the film via Two Ways Through Life tumblr page. They show images of the cosmos, a volcano and some kids playing around a bonfire. This film gets more and more intriguing! Let's just hope it's not a pretentious mess.

Synopsis:

From Terrence Malick, the acclaimed director of such classic films as Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life is the impressionistic story of a Midwestern family in the 1950’s. The film follows the life journey of the eldest son,»

The Civil War DVD Review

According to author and historian Shelby Foote, any understanding of America has to be based in the Civil War, nearly the entirety of “the American character” was defined by it. For his part, Ken Burns agreed. When he began the nine part series, he had already made six films on American history – topics as diverse as the Statue of Liberty and Huey P. Long, the Shakers, and the Brooklyn Bridge. In all, he felt “the dark cloud” of America’s greatest conflict hanging over them.  Continued after the jump. When the war ended, Walt Whitman, a nurse in a Union hospital, summed it up. “Future years will never know the seething hell and the black infernal background, the countless minor scenes and interiors of the secession war; and it is best they should not.”“The real war,” he wrote, “will never get in the books.”In 1990, both Ken Burns and PBS rose to that challenge.»

Now we’re a bit intrigued with wee Logan, and so we’re naturally curious about these pictures of him and his Percy Jackson co-star Alexandra Daddario out in NYC last week. She’s six years older than him, so surely nothing’s happening between them…but wouldn’t it be awesome if something was? (Is there? Someone give us the scoop!) Next up for Logan is The Three Musketeers this summer. Kinda seems like he’s on the verge of blowing up, eh?

Arnold Schwarzenegger Is Doing Terminator 5, Sequel From Fast Five Director

The years as California Governor may have moved Arnold Schwarzenegger closer to the middle, but thankfully, they have not squashed his will to destroy all in his path, especially now that Skynet is active. The action star will return to ruin lives as his most beloved character, The Terminator, in at least one but likely two films in the near future. The move comes almost a year after Pacificor purchased the rights to the franchise for what seemed like an astounding figure of nearly thirty million. With Arnold back in play, that gamble no longer seems like such a foolhardy investment, and the company will make its pitch to Lionsgate, Universal and Sony later this afternoon. Deadline is speculating the Terminator package will sell for upwards of twenty-five to thirty million at minimum, but the ultimate price tag shouldn.t really affect the finished product. Schwarzen-Watch: Arnold Shops Fifth "Terminator"

IFC.com's film writer, Matt Singer, is the biggest Arnold Schwarzenegger fan on the planet. He blogs any time any news about Schwarzenegger's return to acting, no matter how flimsy or improbable, hits the Internet.

Deadline better not be playing. They say that Arnold Schwarzenegger "is attached to star in a rights package that CAA is shopping today that will revive 'The Terminator.'" I would write my reaction but it's hard to type while your crying. While I wipe away the tears of joy, let me give you a little more of Deadline's report:

"Universal, Sony and Lionsgate, and CBS Films are looking hard at the package... Rumor is the project price tag is at least $25 million upfront, against a purchase price near $36 million, not including paydays for Schwarzenegger or [director Justin] Lin... there is no set price, but this will likely be a whopping sale by the time the»

“Blow Out”

The ending of Brian De Palma’s Blow Out hits you in the chest like a hammer. It’s not supposed to be this way; American studio movies don’t end like that. But of course it’s the heartbreaking denouement that has partially helped to make the film endure in the 30 intervening years since its commercially disastrous release, though one can certainly fathom how it alienated audiences at the time (for the record, some critics were passionate defenders; it’s just that most viewers don’t savor being implicated in the spectacle of violence as it is quickly transformed into tragedy). As De Palma himself has wryly observed, the studio likely just expected another erotic romp like Dressed to Kill (De Palma’s previous surprise hit for the Filmways outfit) and were unprepared for a downbeat but cinematically exhilarating last gasp of bravura filmmaking, political critique, and social cynicism»

Arnold Schwarzenegger will be back in Terminator 5

63-year-old actor is attached to Terminator rights package being touted to studios – with Justin Lin in the running to direct

He said he'd be back, and Arnold Schwarzenegger wasn't bluffing. After eight years away from Hollywood, the former California governor is to return to the role of The Terminator in a new film currently being shopped around Hollywood studios, according to Deadline.

Shrugging off suggestions that he may be a little old for an action hero, the 63-year-old actor is heading up a rights package which will bring the series, kicked off by James Cameron with 1984's The Terminator, back to cinemas. Depending on which studio wins the bidding war to make the new film, Justin Lin, currently the toast of Hollywood after returning the Fast and Furious franchise to box office credibility, could be set to direct.

Deadline reports that Universal, Sony, Lionsgate and CBS Films are all considering their options.»

The Tree Of Life UK Release Moves Back To Unknown Date

Source: FilmShaft - The Tree Of Life UK Release Moves Back To Unknown Date

Poor Helen O'Hara at Empire got it in the neck for writing a story about Icon releasing Terrence Malick's The Tree Of Life in the UK on May 4th. At the time it was completely legitimate and the film even appeared on the Fda schedule. Then the shit hit the fan.

Now O'Hara has reported the UK release date has moved back and as yet it's up in the air. Summit Entertainment can have their little fanfare at Cannes after all the hullabaloo. Fact is Malick's films are prestige pictures and make about five quid at the box office.

So all those bloggers and critics who rounded on O'Hara and got their knickers in a twist can chillax. Their smug faces will see The Tree Of Life before "a single mother from Leeds" to quote Empire.»

‘Immortals’ Trailer, Official HD Version

The official release of the trailer for Tarsem's Immortals is now out. Now you can see just what Tarsem meant when he said he was going for a sort of "Caravaggio meets Fight Club" approach -- really, it looks more or less like established Tarsem style as seen in The Cell and The Fall, filtered through 300. There is some real beauty in this trailer, but as has been the case with the director's movies in the past, it's probably too early to make a call about whether the movie will be more than a great slideshow or not.Images like the header pic are the great side of this trailer -- there's some stuff in here that is just jaw-dropping. But that's what we expect from Tarsem, who has always been an ambitious visual stylist. (And occasionally shameless in his appropriation of other artists' work.) Some of the processed»

Steven Tyler Admits To Relapsing (With Joe Perry!) Before He Joined Idol

Steven Tyler went to rehab after multiple leg surgeries in 2008, but in his new Rolling Stone cover story, the Aerosmith singer says he—and guitarist Joe Perry—actually used drugs together during a scrapped recording session around 2009. “It was just like 30 years before,” he explained. “I whipped out mine, he whipped out his and we got high together again. I say to Joe, ‘Wow, man, how you been, it’s been, what, 17 years since we got high together? Joe, you’ve been f—ing running away from me ever since.’” Unsurprisingly, their relapse affected their work. “Joe was high and he couldn’t play. I couldn’t sing, really, because I was snorting everything, and it f—s up your throat. It was the wrong time.”Aerosmith nearly split in late 2009, when Tyler began working on his upcoming autobiography and the band accused him of relapsing. Heartbeats – review

There is a new wave-ish feel to this love-triangle between three close friends in Quebec, which co-stars its precocious director, Xavier Dolan. By Peter Bradshaw

Twenty-two-year-old Xavier Dolan directs and stars in this talky triangle of love, set in French-speaking Quebec. He is Francis, a gay man who is best friends with Maria (Monia Chokri). She is straight, but their friendship is tested severely when they both conceive a passion for a new kid on the block: gorgeous, blond Nicolas (Niels Schneider). They are mad about the boy. But Nicolas, perhaps almost without realising it, has a genius for teasing and manipulating them. The precocious Dolan has certainly shown his talent in putting a plausible feature film together, his second. He interestingly tries for a new wave-ish feel, with hints of Bande а Part and Jules et Jim. But there is something rather flimsy about Heartbeats. That said, it certainly»

Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2: Rodrick Rules – review

Funnier and faster than its predecessor, this sequel is the first live-action film by David Bowers, who directed Flushed Away. By Phelim O'Neill

David "Flushed Away" Bowers brings a lot of slick, comic energy to his first live-action feature, making it funnier and faster than its charming predecessor. Wimpy kid Greg is still negotiating the minefield of pre-teen life, but this time it's his big brother Rodrick who provides him with trouble when the pair find themselves home alone for the weekend. So many movies aimed at this age group aim low with crude, slapstick humour, but this one, despite such tried and tested routines as chocolate-stained trousers, manages to be restrained enough to be actually entertaining.

More Talk, Less Action In New X-Men: First Class Trailer

The marketing for X-Men: First Class thus far has been fairly disappointing. From the horrendous Photoshop disasters they call posters to the repetitious trailers, the whole marketing plan seems to be based on the idea that because it's an X-Men movie people will come no matter what. Come June 3 we'll see if that strategy has paid off.Yahoo! has launched a new trailer for the Matthew Vaughn-directed comic book movie, which serves as a prequel to the events of the Bryan Singer/Brett Ratner trilogy. Back in 1988 Gary Busey was involved in a motorcycle accident while not wearing a helmet. Antje Traue to Play Female Villain Faora in Man Of Steel [Updated]

Zack Snyder's Superman reboot, Man of Steel, may finally be zeroing in on an actress to play the film's female villain.  There's been some debate over whether or not the role is Ursa (played by Sarah Douglas in Superman and Superman II), the accomplice of General Zod (played in Man of Steel by Michael Shannon) comic book villain Faora (who was the inspiration for Ursa), or an entirely new character.  Deadline doesn't have the answer, but they do say that whoever the female villain is, German actress Antje Traue (Pandorum) is the frontrunner for the part.  If she does get the role, she'll be joining a cast that includes Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, and Kevin Costner.[Update: Variety reports that Antje has the role and that role is Faora.  Variety also speculates that Man of Steel will use "the version of Faora that debuted in Action Comics #779 as a Pokolistanian aide of General Zod. That character was an orphan metahuman with the ability to disrupt molecular bonds, which allowed her to create a mutagenic virus that served as the linchpin of Zod's plan."]Man of Steel is set to hit theaters December 2012.»

As the hero does good deeds to improve his karma, he moves up the food chain through a variety of animals, such as a frog, raccoon and dog, trying to get back to his human body and the woman he loves."  He could probably fulfill his good deeds as a fly and a raccoon simply by not bothering people.Spa is the fourth studio to house Instant Karma.  The project was originally set up at DreamWorks, then moved to Universal/Imagine, and found its way to New Line in 2003.  When the project was set up at New Line,»

Exclusive: Director Kevin Munroe on the Horror and Humor of 'Dylan Dog: Dead of Night'

It's no secret that the laugh and the scare are flip sides of the same coin. Both involuntary actions born out of extreme emotion, both tailor-made for that most emotional of all media – the motion picture. And so many of the best horror films of all time are essentially horror comedies – from Bride of Frankenstein to Rosemary's Baby to Drag Me to Hell. Artist-turned-director Kevin Munroe is keenly aware of this lineage, and he's tried to imbue Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, based on the popular Italian comic book, with its own mix of chills and chuckles. I recently spoke with Munroe about his new film (due out in theaters this Friday, April 29) and about some of the landmark movies that influenced it. Check out our»

Pass notes, No 2,966: Arnold Schwarzenegger

He said he'd be back – and now he's an ex-Governator, news is that Arnie is planning a fifth Terminator film

Age: 63.

Appearance: Conan the Sexagenarian.

The Governator and ex-Terminator? Yes, that Arnold Schwarzenegger. Although as of January this year he's now an ex-Governator and, as of reports this week, he may soon be reawakened as a Terminator.

Brilliant! I knew he wasn't lying when he said he'd be back. Well, no, because he came back almost immediately. In the same film.

Yeah, and then he drove a car right through the door of the police station! He did indeed. He also came back in both the second and third films.

Yeah, but in the second one he was the good guy! Genius! If that's your definition of genius you'll be positively ecstatic to hear that, according to Us film industry website Deadline, a rights package for a fifth Terminator»

Second New Trailer Released For X-Men: First Class

Source: FilmShaft - Second New Trailer Released For X-Men: First Class

Earlier this evening we brought you the brand new theatrical trailer for Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, now continuing to up the buzz, a second trailer has been released on the very same night!

The second of tonight's X-Men trailers starts of much like the first one, but at approximately 50 seconds in it lays bare plenty of new footage from Vaughn's mutant prequel. Featuring more of a look at the relationship between Charles Xavier's fledgling X-Men and the United States government, as well as what I think is our first proper look at Havok (Lucas Till) and his mutant power, the trailer is certainly worth a look! The trailer comes via Bleeding Cool, you can check it out by clicking the YouTube link below - enjoy!

Tribeca Review: Saint's White Subtitles Don't Mesh Well With A White Christmas

Saint has two things working against it; it.s subtitled and foreign. No, there.s nothing wrong with requiring an audience to read some text or with a film coming from another country; the problem is the subtitles are often illegible and a number of the jokes are geared towards a Dutch audience. What the rest of us end up with is a confusing and unfunny, albeit visually stimulating, horror comedy. On December 5th, 1492 a murderous saint went on a killing spree in an Amsterdam village. While many lives were lost, the townsfolk got their revenge, burning Saint Nick to death by setting fire to his boat. However, their immediate victory turned into a long-term nightmare with Saint Nick vowing to return on the anniversary of his death when the moon is full on Christmas.Fast forward to present time when the tale of Saint Nick is a mere urban»

Antje Traue Getting Super-Villainous For 'Man of Steel'

It looks like Superman has more than just General Zod to contend with.

Super-villainy is about to get a woman's touch as German actress Antje Traue is in talks to join the cast of "Man of Steel," the Zack Snyder-directed Superman reboot, according to Deadline.

Traue would be playing the role of Faora, a super-villainess that we can only assume is a re-imagining of Ursa, the evil Kryptonian hottie played by Sarah Douglas in "Superman II." She'd be standing (flying?) alongside Michael Shannon as General Zod as they make Superman's job more difficult as he fights for truth, justice and the American way.

Antje Traue was last seen running from aliens (Or Are They?) with Dennis Quaid and Ben Foster in the sci-fi horror film, "Pandorum" (pictured). She'll be seen this summer in Renny Harlin's "5 Days of August," which stars Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia and a former Superman,»

Warner Bros. Hires Writers for Yogi Bear Sequel

Last December, Yogi Bear opened to just $16.7 million, a disappointing total for a family film during the holiday season.  However, the CGI/live-action hybrid showed surprising legs, ending up with $100 million domestic and $200 million worldwide.  According to Variety, Warner Bros. is encouraged enough to move forward on development for the sequel.  The studio hired writing team Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia to script the project.  Sternin and Ventimilia are two of the three screenwriters credited on the screenplay of the first movie (sorry, Brad Copeland) -- the duo recently wrote for the more critic-friendly Rio and are currently working on Peabody and Sherman for DreamWorks Animation.Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake voiced Yogi and Boo-Boo, respectively.  Anna Faris, Tom Cavanaugh, Andrew Daly, and T.J. Miller starred in the live-action roles -- the report does not specify if there are any plans to bring them back for Yogi Bear 2.»

Release Date Shuffle: 'Final Destination 5' Moves Up Two Weeks To Aug 12th, 'Apollo 18' Replaces It

'Our Idiot Brother' Likely Looking For A New Slot The term "Release Date Shuffle" can refer to a number of things. For instance, there was the 1971 single by Nikki and the Noise, a Phil Spector-produced girl band whose lead singer bears a striking resemblance to a certain reclusive movie blogger. The song, in which the girls lamented the wait for their baby to be released from prison, is regarded as something of a lost classic by Spector aficionados, but it was swiftly buried when, in a cruel twist of fate, one of the group's members was murdered by their…»

Tribeca 2011: "Limelight," Reviewed

Billy Corben is the drug documentary kingpin of indie film. He's made two docs about cocaine, one about marijuana, and now "Limelight," about New York City's ecstasy soaked club scene in the 1990s. His particular specialty are films that ape their subject's pharmacological effects: "Cocaine Cowboys" is twitchy and paranoid; "Square Grouper" is mellow and easygoing to a fault. "Limelight" sends us tripping on a relentless 100-minute roll.

The man who leads us on this journey is Peter Gatien, a one-eyed club empresario from Canada who moved to the Us and started opening upscale discos all along the Eastern seaboard. New York, Miami, Atlanta, and then back to New York where he created his crown jewel: Limelight, a massive dance complex housed in a former Episcopal church. The AIDS epidemic of the mid-1980s nearly killed his business, but when a tough guy from Staten Island with the temerity to»

Brett Ratner May Direct The Hercules Movie That MGM Is Making After All

Last summer, with Clash of the Titans still a fairly fresh hit and the Conan the Barbarian remake already in production, Millennium Films was getting ready to tackle that other sword-and-sandals hero Hercules, and had gotten Brett Ratner interested in directing it. For whatever reason Ratner then moved on to direct The Tower Heist, but now that he's finished he's circled back to Hercules after all. According to Vulture Ratner is considering another take on the character at MGM, based on the comic book Hercules: The Thracian Wars. Back in the bygone days of 2008, Peter Berg was planning to shepherd an adaptation of this very comic with Universal and Spyglass Entertainment. Since then Spyglass has taken over as co-chair of MGM, which they've essentially helped resurrect from the dead, so it makes sense for the project to switch studios. A Variety report from back in February, which the studio later»

Studios Now Promoting Their Trailers, Signs

Talk about buzzkill! Britain’s Guardian newspaper has lampooned the current marketing campaign for Friday’s release of The Avengers. It notes that the studio has been stridently promoting its own promo for the movie — a poster. “It is, without question, the most exciting picture of four empty chairs that the world has ever seen,” the Guardian observes. “And it’s packed with all sorts of tasty information, too. For example, careful examination of the photo reveals that Iron Man, Thor, the Incredible Hulk and Captain America will all appear in The Avengers, and also that these characters will all have arses and should therefore be able to sit in chairs. Spoiler alert!” Then again, the newspaper suggests, the campaign just might pan out — “Maybe excited teenagers around the world are currently texting each other things like ‘Did you see that photo?’” — and if so, it goes on, it all might lead to “a world where news stories would announce the imminent arrival of news stories that would announce the imminent arrival of a countdown to a trailer, or teaser photos of chair legs designed to whet our appetite for full photos of empty chairs.” »

Helen Hunt and Moon Bloodgood Join John Hawkes in ‘The Surrogate’

The title The Surrogate, to me, immediately calls up impressions of a horror film or thriller, but the movie that has had John Hawkes attached is something else entirely. movie review: Kung Fu Panda 2

It’s tricky to change the thrust—and the tone—of a story in its second installment, but I think the creators of Kung Fu Panda 2 have pulled it off. The first movie was disarming as it introduced the unlikeliest of action heroes—an eternally hungry, overweight panda named Po, voiced by Jack Black—in a rousing and funny underdog tale. A big part of its appeal was the comic spin it brought to a mentor-student relationship between Po and his diminutive kung fu master Shifu, voiced in hilarious deadpan style by Dustin Hoffman. There was also the novelty of giving Po the opportunity…»

Gavin Hood Will Direct His Ender’S Game Script; Summit Acquires Rights to Film

Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will direct his script for a live-action adaptation of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game for Summit Entertainment. We reported that Hood was rewriting a script by Card back in September of last year. Later, we learned that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman were acting as producers on the adaptation, a fact that no doubt helped the film land financing from Summit. With the cash cow that is The Twilight Saga soon ending for the studio, it's believed that Summit is hoping Ender's Game will compete for coveted teen box office dollars against Lionsgate's similarly targeted sci-fi adaptation, The Hunger Games.Briefly, Card's 1985 novel was based on a short story published in 1977 and is set in a future Earth that is reeling from two alien invasions.»

The last fires of film's old devil

Ken Russell is leaning on his stick outside the Pebble Beach restaurant in Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire, while his fourth wife parks the car. "Thanks for recognising me," he says as I shake his hand. It would be hard not to. Russell is wearing open-toed sandals, red trousers pulled up so far over his waist they're bearing down on his nipples and stripy shirt, while his big florid face is topped by a rage of grey hair.

But today Russell, now 84, has the air of a last-act Lear, or Tigger unbounced. Two weeks ago he suffered a stroke; this is only his second outing from the New Forest hospital where he's been recuperating. After greeting me, he looks rheumily out into the middle distance,»

Last week, Jon Savage outlined what made West Berlin so culturally fascinating 30 or so years ago: "An oasis of extremity created by the cold war … peopled with bohemians and outcasts." One thing he didn't explain was why it was peopled by those bohemians and outcasts. Enter Hooper165, who explained that Berliners were exempt from conscription to the West German army, which "triggered in the 70s and early 80s a vast youth migration from all parts of Germany into Berlin". Showmaster expanded the point, explaining that even as the young were desperate to move in to the city, the old were desperate to move out. And why did the young live so much in the moment?»

New Banner for The Hangover Part II

With its May 26th release quickly approaching, Warner Bros. has released a new promotional banner for The Hangover Part II. While I've been known to be somewhat critical of the film's trailer and television spots, I have to say that I enjoy any promotional materials that play up both Ken Jeong and the monkey (not trying to be disrespectful, I truly don't know his name). Considering both are included here, this new banner is okay in my book.Hit the jump to check it out. To peruse all of our previous coverage of The Hangover Part II, click here. Directed by Todd Phillips, The Hangover Part II stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis, Ken Jeong, Jamie Chung, and Justin Bartha. Here's the new banner [click to enlarge]:Here's the official synopsis for The Hangover Part II:The Hangover Part IIIn theaters on May 26(Warner Bros. Ben Kingsley Signs on for Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator

Ben Kingsley will join Sacha Baron Cohen in The Dictator, a Paramount comedy by Seinfeld scribes Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and Dave Mandel (and Cohen's frequent collaborator Dan Mazer) that "follows a heroic dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy never comes to the country he so lovingly oppressed." Kingsley is slated to star as one of two Middle Eastern characters who comes into play, and Jason Mantzoukas of The League is in talks for the other role. Personally, I'm still hurting from Kingsley's Oscar loss for Sexy Beast, so let's hope this unconventional story gives him the standing for a second statuette. [Variety]»

Sfiff 54 Day Seven: A Useful Life, Oliver Stone Tribute, The Last Buffalo Hunt, Attenberg

Meredith Brody's diary entry for Sdiff day seven: The film-going day begins with inserting a DVD into the player, which I guess means staying rather than going. It’s A Useful Life, a film directed by a former employee of the Cinemateca Uruguaya, Federico Veiroj, about a longtime employee of the Cinemateca Uruguaya in Montevideo (which occasions a notation in the opening credits that the movie does not reflect the actual Cinemateca Uruguaya in any way shape or form). Said rather sad-sackish employee (played by an Uruguayan film critic with the young/old face of an obsessive) has spent a quarter-century doing all that’s necessary in showing films to the public – programming, introducing, talking on the radio, even repairing a seat in the theater. Video Interview: Prom's Good Girl And Bad Boy, Aimee Teegarden And Thomas McDonell

Throughout the week I've been bringing you interviews with the main cast of Disney's Prom-- you can go here for the full collection. And while Prom is an ensemble movie, consisting of lots of different stories about kids at a Midwestern high school getting ready for the big night, the center of the story is the unlikely romance between Nova, the overachieving girl who was too busy planning prom to actually secure a date, and Jesse, the rebellious loner who is way too cool to attend anything resembling prom. The two are forced to work together to make sure prom actually happens, and wouldn't you know it, in the process they might just be falling in love.Aimee Teegarden, who plays Nova, might be the biggest name in the Prom cast thanks to her roles on Friday Night Lights or even in the recent Scream 4. Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil Review

Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil comes out during a time when unoffensive animated films just aren't good enough anymore. For the film watcher, this is a great time with the likes of Pixar and Dreamworks upping the ante, with a few dark horses here and there and some old mainstays like Disney still staking a claim. Unfortunately, Hoodwinked Too isn't a shining example of the current times. Instead, a bizarre plot, uninspired animation, and worst of all, a lack of more than a handful of laughs keep this sequel from pushing the genre forward. The shame is that there is some quality work done by some of the voice cast, but the rest of the film falls flat around them. Hit the jump for the full review. Red (Hayden Panettiere) is being trained by the Sister Hoods in the art of fighting and baking, but all is not well for»

Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci & Lenny Kravitz Sought For 'Hunger Games'

Ethan Jamieson & Tara Macken Cast As District 4 Players While most of the "Hunger Games" casting so far has centered around the smaller names that populate the various Districts in the game (please see the most recent casting of Ethan Jamieson and Tara Macken), it seems that the filmmakers are not done headhunting for big names to join the franchise-starting film and now three more stars are being tossed into the rumor mill. Vulture reports that Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci and Lenny Kravitz have all had offers sent their way, and while details are very slim--apparently agents and assistants…»

With Zach Galifianakis Out, Jeff Bridges Could Join Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.

Jeff Bridges could breathe new life into R.I.P.D..

Zach Galifianakis decided to withdraw from the comic book adaptation earlier this month, just two months after joining. Based on the Darkhorse comic book by writer Peter Lenkov and artist Lucas Marangon, R.I.P.D. would follow Ryan Reynolds as a recently murdered man who agrees to work for the Rest in Peace Department (or, R.I.P.D.) for 100 years in exchange for the chance to find his killer. Bridges is in negotiations to play Reynolds' partner, an agent who looks like Rooster Cogburn (Bridges' Oscar-nominated character from True Grit but without an eye patch) and has worked for R.I.P.D. since the 1800s. The only problem may be scheduling.

Charlie Sheen Furious Over Chuck Lorre’s New Men Plans: “A-Hole P—y Loser”

Disappointed fans who yell for Charlie Sheen to “say something weird!” at his hit-or-miss live shows should just bring up Chuck Lorre. The actor has fired one violent torpedo at the producer for reportedly planning to bring back Two And A Half Men without Sheen (“You sad silly fool. A-hole p—y loser. Put on the gloves you low rent, nut-less sociopath; I’ll beat your chicken s— soul in a court room into a state of gratitude.”). Here’s a larger slice of the screed:

Wow, I’m sure your children are So Proud of you. You can teach’em how to be a stupid b—h. A narcissist. A coward. A loser. A spineless rat. I’m out here with my fans every night. The message is crystal clear; No Charlie Sheen. No Show.

Jeremy Renner Takes On Legendary Actor Steve McQueen

How many modern actors can you think of that truly exude "man's man?" Not muscle-bound hulks or over-coiffed pretty boys, but taciturn masculinity combined with enough screen charisma to hold an audience spellbound?

Yeah, not many.

When actor Jeremy Renner removed his blast shielding in "The Hurt Locker" before getting into a car to diffuse a bomb, exclaiming "If I'm gonna die, I wanna die comfortable," audiences immediately recognized: "That's a Man." Now the newly appointed Avenger, two-time Oscar nominee, and caretaker of Bourne's legacy may take on the ultimate screen tough guy, Steve McQueen, in a biopic which, according to THR, Renner will produce as well as star in.

For those unaware, Steve McQueen is basically the badass icon that every leading man aspires to be. While some dudes need to unleash their bag of actorly tricks and intense pyrotechnics on us, McQueen was a quintessential Movie Actor, a»

Academy Unspools Summer of Silents, Starring Keaton, Chaplin, Oliver & Hardy

On the heels of one the most acclaimed films in the Cannes Film Festival this year--the silent film The Artist, made in Hollywood by the French, which earned Jean Dujardin the best actor Palme d'Or--the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences is presenting a wondrous program, Summer of Silents. The appreciation of the visual dynamics of silent film has grown in recent years, and actors from Robert Downey Jr. (Chaplin) to Johnny Depp have spoken of what they learned studying the work of Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton (whose The General is a must-see July 20). John Lasseter, too, has credited the visual storytelling of silents as a key inspiration for Pixar films. See the Silent Film trailer and full program below. Summer of »

Jon Favreau Talks Genre-Mash Cowboys & Aliens: The Science of Sincerity

In an interview with Toh's Anthony D'Alessandro last week at the National Italian American Federation Gala, where Jon Favreau was lauded with the org’s Special Entertainment Achievement Award, the actor-director gave up some nuggets of intel on his upcoming summer genre-mash Cowboys & Aliens, starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. Kitschy high-concept vehicles can be a turnoff on their title alone. Before moviegoers even approached the ticket booth, they could smell the stench of ridiculous in polyester pics such as 1996’s Mars Attacks! May Preview

The 2011 box office started to show signs of recovery in April, and that's likely going to continue through May. Last May's total was on the low-end for the month ($905.4 million), while the highest-grossing May ever was in 2009 ($1.018 billion). That figure could be reachable with Fast Five holdover grosses, heavyweights Thor and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and the first six days of Kung Fu Panda 2 and The Hangover Part II. May 6Thor officially begins the Summer against romantic comedies Something Borrowed and Jumping the Broom, though its biggest competition looks to be Fast Five. The sequel is poised for a huge opening this weekend and should still be raking in the cash when Thor debuts, which is the first time a tentpole has faced major holdover competition at the beginning of the season. Also, while Thor is the latest in the popular Avengers series, the godly title»

Inside Job Director Charles Ferguson to Helm Film About WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange for HBO

His financial crisis documentary Inside Job took home the Academy Award for Best Documentary earlier this year, but now director Charles Ferguson is moving into the realm of fact-based drama for HBO. Deadline reports he will be at the helm of a new film about WikiLeaks founder and headline grabber Julian Assange. HBO is working with BBC on the project which will use Raffi Khatchadourian's New Yorker article, No Secrets: Julian Assange’s Mission for Total Transparency, as the source material. The article itself follows Assange and WikiLeaks operatives as they embark on their mission to leak a 38-minute classified video taken inside the cockpit of a U.S. Army Apache Helicopter. With as much attention as Assange has gotten in the news recently, the film should certainly be of interest to viewers. Can I suggest Neil Patrick Harris to play Assange?»

‘Rise of the Apes’ Featurette Recaps the Grand Arc of the Film’s Story

Do you feel like the Rise of the Planet of the Apes trailer didn't give you enough of the film's full story? Then check out this new-ish featurette that explains a good chunk of the tale. I say 'new-ish' because this premiered during the Apes webcast that took place a few weeks back; this is just the standalone release. Check it out below if you want to see a bit of footage that wasn't in the trailer and get a taste of what's to come in this Planet of the Apes prequel and kinda/sorta vague remake of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. For a bit more info on the film, let's go to Tom Felton, who plays a pivotal character in the film. He told MTV [1],He's not a good guy. People aren't going to be cheering for me in this film either. Weekend Preview: Fast Five Pumps Testosterone, Prom Tween Fantasy, 13 Assassins, Cave 3-D, The Arbor

It's a weekend of extremes, with the Fast Five testosterone-fest, a Prom tween fantasy, not one but 13 Assassins and a Hoodwinked Too! that no one asked for. Several indie gems are mixed in with some less-inspiring releases: we recommend Werner Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams in 3-D and Clio Bernard's documentary on playwright Andrea Dunbar, The Arbor, a film that turns the term 'documentary' on its head but "once you settle in, [Bernard's technique] proves enormously effective," writes ThePlaylist. Two Competing Martin Luther King Jr Projects Combine Forces

If you can.t beat .em outright, join forces. That.s the old adage in play here as two competing Martin Luther King Jr. biopics have decided to partner rather than go it alone. The Dreamworks half of the mash-up had been widely considered to be the more likely to eventually hit the screens because of its close involvement with the Martin Luther King Jr estate, but despite having the official rights to all the preacher.s intellectual property, the studio never could find a script they were completely happy with. On the other hand, Warner Brothers had a version they were pleased with all along. Penned by screenwriter Kario Salem, his take reportedly took three and a half years to complete and was bolstered by scores of research and numerous interviews, but it lacked access to the official .I Have A Dream. recording. This new super project, co-financed by»

Robert Rodriguez Says 'Spy Kids 4' Was Inspired By Jessica Alba's Diaper Duty

When you think of Robert Rodriguez, you're more likely to think of him as the guy responsible for highly stylized blood-filled thrillers like "Planet Terror," "Predators" and "Sin City." But don't forget that this is the same guy who brought us the "Spy Kids" franchise all those years ago, a series that's been inactive since 2003.

Well, Rodriguez is calling those young spies into active duty one more time this summer — and this time, there's a heavy emphasis on "duty."

Jessica Alba stars in "Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World" as a spy mom who embarks on covert espionage missions, sometimes with a newborn baby strapped to her chest. As you do. It's a new take on a tried and true franchise, and the inspiration behind this latest iteration of "Spy Kids" has some pretty surprising origins — namely, Alba's real-life diaper-changing responsibilities as a new mom. We spoke»

X-Men: First Class is a superhero movie, but also a period piece. The Matthew Vaughn directed prequel is set during the sixties and sees Professor Xavier.s mutant team of heroes in their infancy, dealing with the Cuban Missile Crisis. Since it.s set in the 60s, you.d think that might mean a fantastic opportunity for a great, period specific soundtrack. Oh and how about a boy band? Wait, a boy band?Multiple sources are reporting that Vaughn is hiring the British boy band Take That to provide music for the film. Channing Tatum To Star In Film Based On His Own Stripper Past

Who knew it would be the promise of Channing Tatum‘s thrusting pelvis and meticulous pole work that could keep Traffic director Steven Soderbergh out of retirement? Despite what the director of Erin Brockovich claimed earlier this spring, he isn’t going to end his filmmaking career with Liberace with Michael Douglas and Man From U.N.C.L.E. with George Clooney. He instead will be shooting the greatest movie ever made: Channing Tatum’s stripper film.

Deadline is reporting Soderbergh with team up with Tatum for Magic Mike, a story about a stripper who must teach a younger dancer how to succeed on and off the dollar bill-covered stage; the story is based on Tatum’s stripping experience before he broke into acting. “When Channing talked to me about this, I thought it was one of the best ideas I’d ever heard for a movie. I said I wanted in immediately.»

This week's new film events

London Australian Film Festival

Australia's brightest stars tend to get snapped up by Hollywood even quicker than ours, and there are plenty of potential defectors here, from the makers of recent hit Animal Kingdom to the handsome young cast of high school thriller Wasted On The Young. Not everyone is out to find the next Nicole Kidman or Hugh Jackman, mind you. The noble Aussie genre lineage continues with shark horror The Reef and Red Hill, a modern-day western with a smalltown sheriff under siege. Feelgood opener Red Dog, based on the true tale of an outback mutt, is one for the home crowd, while colourful "womance" Jucy closes the festival with its own offbeat groove.

This week's new films

Thor (12A)

(Kenneth Branagh, 2011, Us) Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Kat Dennings, Idris Elba. 114 mins

Let the silly season commence with this expensive comic-book movie, which takes full advantage of its second-tier superhero, free casting rein and Asgard-sized budget to deliver some premium disposable spectacle. Hemsworth's beefy, impetuous thunder god is literally brought down to earth, where thanks to mortal hotties like Portman, he learns there's more to life than swinging a hammer around, but not much more.

Cedar Rapids (15)

(Miguel Arteta, 2011, Us) Ed Helms, John C Reilly, Anne Heche. 87 mins

The corruption of Helms's naive smalltown nerd via a debauched midwest insurance convention is as broadly amusing as you'd expect, striking a filthy-sweet tone somewhere between the Us Office and The Hangover.
