This week's new films

Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (12A)

(Rob Marshall, 2011, Us) Johnny Depp, Penйlope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush, Sam Claflin. 137 mins

Ahoy! Aha! Ahem. The excitement of another rip-roaring high seas adventure dissipates almost before they set sail in this lightweight epic of action set-pieces and people trying to get stuff they want. Depp is business as usual and the presentation is classy, but the new blood brings little to this non-party, which feels less like a story than a succession of twists and swoops along well-established tracks – like a theme-park ride, in fact. Oh, hang on …

Win Win (15)

(Tom McCarthy, 2011, Us) Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, Bobby Cannavale. 106 mins

Giamatti's hard-up lawyer inherits a whole heap of surrogate family issues, and a teen high-school wrestling ace, in a wry drama that doesn't really stray out of its suburban comfort zone.

Julia's Eyes (15)

(Guillem Morales, 2010, Spa) Belйn Rueda, Lluнs Homar,»

I've not seen The Hangover Part II yet but I'll bet Bridesmaids is funnier

With plum roles for women and an equal commitment to gross-out, Kristen Wiig's movie will be a great Hangover cure

If you're in the market for a fantastically dark gross-out black comedy about clueless young Americans trapped in a never-ending nightmare in south-east Asia, skip The Hangover Part II and just watch Apocalypse Now, reissued this week for the umpteenth time. I'm out of town this week so I've yet to see Hangover II, though I imagine there's a worldwide embargo on pre-release glimpses of its priceless shit jokes and fart oratorios, lest one dime of its projected mega profits be lost to piracy or to unfounded rumours of comedic inadequacy.

The latter, as it happens, has long been my biggest problem with the Todd Phillips oeuvre. My main memories of his last three R-rated comedies – Old School, The Hangover, and Due Date – are of wall-to-wall ads in the month preceding release,»

“This Is Not A Film” And More: Iranian Cinema At The Cannes Film Festival

When is a film not a film? In one of the triumphs of this year’s Cannes Film Festival, the remarkable documentary This is Not A Film, by Jafar Panahi and Mojtaba Mirtahmasb, asks this question and more as it portrays, diary-like, a day in Panahi’s life awaiting trial at his home in Tehran. Panahi talks on the phone with friends, illustrates with tape the boundaries of a future film set, chats with a garbage man who has just earned his Masters degree, and is kept company by his daughter’s free-roaming and giant pet lizard, Igi. If one is forbidden by law to make movies for 20 years, if one but sits in front of another’s camera, if one merely reads a vivid script aloud, does a word like “director” still have meaning?

Art Linson's 'The Comedian' Set For Another Robert De Niro & Martin Scorsese Reunion?

Is Robert De Niro set to return to the comedy world with regular collaborator Martin Scorsese? After their twisted exploration of Rupert Pupkin in "The King Of Comedy," De Niro is reportedly interested in a script by producer Art Linson called "The Comedian" which follows the exploits of an insult comic described as Don Rickles meets Joan Rivers, with Scorsese being eyed as the man to helm. It certainly sounds like a fascinating prospect with the role noted to be "a serious role with Oscar potential" for the actor and one "quite different than Rupert Pupkin" with stand-up aspects of…»

Cannes Interview: Nanni Moretti Takes On The Vatican and Woody Allen

With Cannes competition entry Habemus Papum, Italian writer-actor-director Nanni Moretti, much like The Queen or The King' Speech, takes us behind the scenes of a place that we are forbidden to enter. He imagines what would happen if a Pope finds out that he has been elected as supreme religious leader, panics and rejects the job. Great French actor Michel Piccolli plays this Pope. And typically, Moretti is in the mix as an atheist therapist sent in to talk the new Pope into accepting God's will. (So far Cannes reviews are mixed.) The movie starts out very funny and then loses its way; I wanted more dialogue (King's Speech-style) between the shrink and the Pope. Hearing the Pope spout psychobabble about separating from his mother »

Weekend Receipts: Pirates A Bit At Sea While Bridesmaids Stays Strong

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides plundered a hair over $90 million this weekend, but thanks to Hollywood expectations and arithmetic, it's a bit of disappointing haul for Depp and his crew. But Bridesmaids retained the second spot, barely depreciating at all from last week. Sisters are doing it for themselves! And by it, I mean pooping on themselves. Your weekend receipts are here.»

Andy Dick Sued For Rubbing Genitals On Comedy Club Attendee

Considering how many people have been fondled by Andy Dick without consent and exposed to his genitals, it’s a little ironic the comedian’s being sued by someone who actually paid to see him. Review: 'Too Big To Fail' A Solid, Brisk & Entertaining Run Through The 2008 Bailout

"Motherfucker." That is the first word of dialogue uttered in "Too Big To Fail" and it sums up the feeling for many who in the fall of 2008 watched closely as the United States came precariously close to suffering a major economic collapse unlike anything seen since the Great Depression. It was a sharp wake up call for the nation and the subject has already spawned a handful of films, notably Michael Moore's rushed and reactionary "Capitalism: A Love Story" and the much better Oscar-winning documentary "Inside Job." At Sundance earlier this year, "Margin Call" premiered, going inside a fictional…»

Cannes Titles 'Snowtown' and 'Polisse' Find Domestic Distribution

Karin Viard, Joey Starr and Marina Fois in Polisse

It's a nice surprise to see a pair of films I enjoyed at Cannes find themselves domestic distribution beginning with Maiwenn's Jury Prize-winning Polisse, a film I referred to as "a fast-paced, tragic, touching, emotional and occasionally hilarious look at the French police's Child Protective Unit (Cpu)." Outside of most French film critics, I was one of the few critics to enjoy it as much as I did, but at least now there's an opportunity for stateside viewers to give it a look as Sundance Selects will be distributing it. You can read my full review of the film right here.

'Lost' One Year Later: Why The Series Finale Didn't Work

Over the past year, I have had no less than a dozen conversations with folks about the finale of "Lost" ... the cyclical beauty of that final shot, the poignant symbolism of the stained glass window (it's all about the bardo, dude), the high-minded concepts like sacrifice and interconnectedness and destiny that it espoused. I have nodded and sipped my drink politely, listened intently, perhaps even interjected occasionally. But at the end of each and every one of those conversations, I found myself more confused than I was when it began, mostly because I couldn't believe anyone actually liked the way the show ended.

So, at the risk of upsetting Damon Lindelof (something that is surprisingly easy to do), I would like to go on record as saying that the finale of "Lost" was absolutely terrible. I hated it when it first aired and now, exactly one year later, I think I hate it even more.»

Movie Pet Peeve #14: Characters Hanging Up the Phone Without Saying Goodbye

So today I'm watching the movie "Wild Things," the 1998 erotic thriller with Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, Denise Richards and Kevin Bacon. One scene in particular caught my eye -- no, it wasn't the make-out session between Campbell and Richards. It was an otherwise innocuous phone call between three characters who shall remain nameless for reasons of spoilers. Here is the transcript of their one-sided conversation:

Character #1: Now, look. We gotta stay calm, all of us. Now since the settlement, people think I'm rich. So I'm out there spending money, doing what rich guys do. Now this cop, Duquette, he's gonna try and fuck with you. Don't let him.

Character #2: Yeah, that's easy for you to say!

Character #1: [Character #2]! Don't fall apart! Only people who can fuck this up is us.

Character #1 hangs up the phone.

I know a transcript isn't the ideal way to analyze a scene in a film,»

Interview: Discussing Talking Dogs and 'Beginners' with Writer/Director Mike Mills

I want to start out by saying this was one of the most difficult pieces I've had to write for this site. That's because I love, love writer/director Mike Mills' new film Beginners and I really hope I do it justice with this article.

I'm not saying this because I was invited to the Focus Features junket and fed breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel. I'm saying it because Beginners is the best film I've seen this year and maybe the best film-going experience I've had since I went gaga for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World last year. Hollywood Planning A Dark Version Of The Little Mermaid Now

You’d think Hollywood would wait to see if the world actually wants dark re-tellings of fairy tales before making a dozen—especially when Red Riding Hood failed to storm the box office—but it looks like Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Peter Pan Begins, Oz: The Great And Powerful and all those Snow White movies aren’t the only ones in the works. The Hollywood Reporter says Sony has picked up Mermaid: A Twist On The Classic Tale, which will tentatively be produced by Tobey Maguire with Country Strong‘s Shana Feste directing. And how could that not be a good idea?

Some may wonder if the film will highlight the creepy not-so-feminist message of a woman sacrificing her voice to win the chance to seduce a man with her body, but Mermaid has a twist on the classic quirk. Instead, it’s about a princess set to enter a loveless marriage with a prince,»

Title Changes for Former ‘John Carter of Mars,’ ‘Now’ and ‘Still I Rise’

Double Academy Award-winning director of Finding Nemo and Wall-e, Andrew Stanton, is currently working on his first foray into live action, an adaptation of the classic sci-fi fantasy novel John Carter of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs [1]. Bill Hunter obituary

Australian actor known for his roles in Strictly Ballroom and Muriel's Wedding

For many Australians, the screen persona of the character actor Bill Hunter, who has died of cancer aged 71, was the archetypal "ocker", an uncultivated Australian working man who enjoys beer, "barbies", Aussie rules football and V8 supercars. According to Phillip Noyce, who directed the oft-bearded actor in three movies and a TV miniseries: "Bill was the absolute essence of the Anglo-Irish Australian male of the 20th century. Seemingly gruff and impenetrable, he could convey the tenderness beneath the exterior."

He was seen and appreciated by millions in three of Australia's biggest hit films – Baz Luhrmann's Strictly Ballroom (1992), Pj Hogan's Muriel's Wedding (1994) and Stephan Elliott's The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994) – all revealing Hunter at the peak of his powers.

He was born in Melbourne, but was brought up in rural Victoria, in Australia's south-east.»

Don't consider these reviews, gentle reader. Rather, think of Insert Credit as a mix of hands-on time, informed opinion and intuition.

For the week of May 23, 2011, you should insert credit into: "Bumpy Road".

Why do cute games work so well on Apple's handhelds? Sure, games with twee aesthetics pop up everywhere, but something about the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch make games like "World of Goo," "Eliss," and "Cut the Rope" sing. Maybe the cuteness serves as a cognitive shortcut for games that might otherwise seem daunting. Hearing that chubby bird's whoop in "Tiny Wings" lets you know you're doing something right in an immediate fashion.

No country loves the crime genre quite as much as the French. Sure, it might have been derived from the States, but it was the French who really took it to their hearts, giving directors like Sam Fuller and Alfred Hitchcock the critical respect they craved, and reinventing it with the likes of "А bout de souffle" and "Rififi," while many of the best recent examples, like Jacques Audiard's "The Beat That My Heart Skipped" and "A Prophet," came from France. On Its Way to Glasgow, 'The Dark Knight Rises' Adds Law and Religion

Casting on The Dark Knight Rises isn't slowing up as Variety reports Brett Cullen ("Lost", Ghost Rider) and Chris Ellis (Transformers, Catch Me if You Can) have joined the cast as a judge and priest respectively. The duo obviously don't have large roles in the film and neither are necessarily household names, but their filmographies show Nolan has once again brought on actors that have an extensive body of work, not to mention I'm sure one or two members of the audience will recognize Goodwin Stanhope.

Production on the film is already underway in London and Croydon and as Scotland's Daily Record reports, it will head north to Glasgow for several scenes early next month.

A source told the Daily Record's John Dingwall, "[Director Christopher Nolan] plans to use various cities to provide a mash-up of what Gotham will look like. Glasgow was location-scouted for the last film Dark Knight, though in the end it wasn't used.»

Lars von Trier extends Cannes apology

Danish director says Nazi comments that got him banned from the Cannes film festival were 'unintelligent, ambiguous and needlessly hurtful'

While the Cannes film festival officially ended on Sunday, the Lars von Trier controversy apparently has some way left to run. The banned Danish film-maker today released another statement clarifying his comments at last Wednesday's press conference, in which he jokingly claimed that he was "a Nazi" and "understood Hitler". Von Trier now describes those remarks as "unintelligent ... and needlessly hurtful".

The director 's latest statement appears designed, in part, to distance himself from remarks made by a minister in the Iranian government, who accused the Cannes organisers of "fascist behaviour" in their decision to banish Von Trier. "Surely you remember that the Cannes festival was established with the aim of struggling against fascists," the Iranian deputy culture minister Javad Shamaqdari wrote in a letter to the festival president, Gilles Jacob.»

Tahar Rahim & Niel Arestrup To Reunite For Joachim Lafosse's 'Aimer А Perdre La Raison'

Looks like a reunion of talent from Jacques Audiard's excellent 2009 film "A Prophet" is in the works with Joachim Lafosse's next directorial effort, the family drama "Aimer а perdre la raison"--which roughly translates to "Loving Without Reason." With star Tahar Rahim and scribe Thomas Bidegain already on board, their 'Prophet' colleague Niels Arestrup (pictured above next to Rahim) has seemingly replaced Gerard Depardieu in the cast for the story of a doctor who raises his friend's brother in Belgium and the drama that develops when the boy grows up and raises his own family. Co-scripted by Lafosse and Bidegain,…»

‘A Little Help’ Trailer

In 2009 The King of Queens and Ned and Stacey exec producer Michael J. Weithorn wrote and directed his first feature, called A Little Help. He scored in a couple ways with the cast, which features Jenna Fischer along with Kim Coates, Lesley Ann Warren, Aida Turturro and Chris O'Donnell. But the film turned out as a classically middle of the road indie drama  that played at a couple festivals (starting with the Seattle Ff in May 2010) and then sat around waiting for a distributor to throw it some love. Now Freestyle Releasing and Secret Handshake are finally getting the film into theaters this June, but a quick look at the new trailer will clue you in on what has taken so long. This might be one of the most difficult types of films to get right. This trailer isn't terrible, but there's also nothing in it to suggest the movie is very good.»

'Pirates Of The Caribbean': Will Johnny Depp Keep Sailing With The Franchise?

From MTV Movies: While "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" opened to $90.1 million this weekend, showing the franchise has perhaps sprung a leak domestically in its fourth installment, the new film set a five-day international opening record of $256.3 million.

Disney is reportedly convinced this latest "Pirates" could pass the $654 million international total for 2007's "At World's End." The takeaway from all this box-office chatter is we likely haven't seen the last of the swashbuckling series.

In fact, development on a fifth film is already under way, with a draft of a script from Terry Rossio, who also penned "On Stranger Tides," in the hands of Disney execs and both director Rob Marshall and producer Jerry Bruckheimer signaling their interest in returning to franchise. The question, however, is whether or not star Johnny Depp will reprise his role as Jack Sparrow.

Elle Fanning, Neve Campbell, Max Irons and Claire Foy to Make Beautiful Music with Vivaldi

Can a composer truly be declared immortal before a feature film about his life has graced the silver screen? Mozart got his movie years ago, as did Beethoven.

And now it's Vivaldi's turn.

Director Boris Damast (who doesn't have much to speak of under his list of credits beyond the widely panned "Pros & Cons" from over a decade ago) is helming an as-of-now untitled biopic about this famed composer, The Playlist reports.

Despite his lack of street cred, Damast has rallied a star-studded cast, which has Max Irons ("Red Riding Hood") and Claire Foy ("Season of the Witch") locked in, as well as Elle Fanning and Neve Campell in the final stages of talks to join.

The story will follow Vivaldi (who will likely be played by Irons) as he transforms a talented, but traumatized group of girls — the illegitimate daughters of courtesans — into a world-class orchestra that made»

Bridesmaids: What A Reception!

If executives at one studio were wringing their hands over the failure of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides to crack the $100-million mark, executives at another were no doubt pumping them in the air after learning that Bridesmaids declined just 20 percent in its second week to $20.9 million. It managed to beat out Thor, last week’s No. 1 film, which fell 55 percent to $15.5 million. Also celebrating wildly on Monday presumably were the distributors of Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, which earned $599,003 dollars in just six theaters — or an average of $100,000 per theater. (Earlier estimates had put the per-theater average much lower but still well above that for Pirates 4.)

The top ten films over the weekend, according to final figures compiled by Box Office Mojo (figures in parentheses represent total gross to date):1. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Disney, $90,151,958, (New); 2. Bridesmaids, Universal, $20,882,070, 1 Wks. ($59,341,310); 3. Thor, Paramount, $15,455,304, 3 Wks. ($145,361,459); 4. Why Even 2D Movies May Now Seem Darker

With the proliferation of digital 3D projection systems throughout the U.S., some theater owners are leaving the special polarizing devices, nearly all of them made by Sony, on the lenses of their projectors even when they’re using them to show 2D movies, resulting in “drastically darker” screen images, according to the Boston Globe. A projectionist for one Boston-area theater told the Globe, “When you’re running a 2-D film, that polarization device has to be taken out of the image path. If they’re not doing that, it’s crazy, because you’ve got a big polarizer that absorbs 50 percent of the light.” Audience members, the Globe explained, can determine whether the 3D lens has been removed simply by looking at the light coming out of the projection booth If they see two beams, it means that the polarizing device has not been removed. In an interview with the newspaper, Peter Farrelly said that last February he attended promotional screenings of Hall Pass, which he co-directed with his brother Bobby, at two Boston theaters, one of which had not removed the 3D device. “The first screening looked spectacular and the second was so dark, it was daytime versus nighttime. If they’re doing this for a big screening, I can’t imagine what they do for regular customers. That’s no way to see a movie.”»

'The Hangover Part II': Looking Back On The Wolf-Pack's Path

What a long, strange trip it's been since the first "Hangover" film dropped in 2009. Who could predict that an original comedy starring three mid-level actors would gross hundreds of millions around the world, or that it would become the new standard of bromance comedy, or that you'd actually want to drink more after seeing where alcohol had led the wolf-pack?

But less surprising is how the careers of the actors involved have taken off. Almost all of the primary actors in "The Hangover" have found increased success in the biz, whether it's as action stars, comedic bit players, or reality TV stars.

How far have they come, and where are they going? Find out after the jump!

Can 'Star Trek 2' Morph From 70-Page Outline To Summer Tent Pole In 13 Months?

Paramount isn't confirming any of this, but I'm told that there soon should be good news and bad news on the Star Trek sequel front. The good news: With his film Super 8 set for release June 10, JJ Abrams is expected to announce shortly his return as director of Star Trek 2. The bad news: Even moving at warp speed, Abrams will be hard pressed to make the June 29, 2012 release date that the studio set for the film. I'm told that the move being considered right now is to push Trek back for a Holiday 2012 release. This comes after Paramount pushed back the other franchise film in its arsenal that has Chris Pine as its star. Pine's also playing Jack Ryan in the reboot of the Tom Clancy-created series. Pine was expected to shoot that film first, but the script wasn't ready. Paramount hired David Koepp to rewrite Adam Cozad's script.»

Here's What A Game Made by a Five-Year-Old Looks Like

The problem with adulthood is that you can no longer summon up the insane anti-logic of how childhood creativity unfolds. There's powerful energy there and, if you're lucky and/or vigilant, you can hold onto it in your head or in a box in your parents' garage.

Game developer Ryan Henson Creighton had another idea, though. He brought his kindergarten age daughter Cassie to TOJam, an indie dev gathering in where attendees meet, greet and crank out games on the quick. Creighton then tapped into the clearly brilliant imagination of her fertile mind and together they produced a marvel of the modern age called "Sissy's Magical Ponycorn Adventure."

Creighton, who's the founder of kid-friendly studio Untold Entertainment, details the father-daughter creative journey on his blog, noting that Cassie even designed one of the game's puzzles herself. Here, their tense negotiations:

New 'Riddick' Film Causes Existential Crisis For Vin Diesel

True art requires sacrifice. Ask any artist about the burdens they have carried, both emotionally and financially, to see their vision through and you will learn that this is a universal truth. Vincent van Gogh's missing ear may be the best known example, but for true art, a true artist will bear any burden.

Just ask Vin Diesel.

In a classic good news, bad news scenario, Diesel revealed on his Facebook page today that he is very close to finalizing a deal to film a third "Riddick" movie, but with two major catches: he'll have to accept a pay cut -- and judging by his comments, he'll apparently have to risk his soul as well. What's an artist to do?

Riddick, as most everyone knows, is Diesel's breakout sci-fi badass; appearing first in the film "Pitch Black" and then in the follow-up "The Chronicles of Riddick," Riddick, who has»

Hollywood Fights Dirty in the Ongoing 'Snow White' Wars

If you've ever wondered what it's like working at a big movie studio, remember back to your elementary school days. Name calling, pranks, jealousy-fueled temper tantrums, bitter rivalries that ended with woodchips up your nose -- back in those days, you didn't brush off little tiffs. You got even.

Hollywood works the same way. One studio will put a "brilliant" (all relative) idea into motion and almost immediately, a handful of copycats from competing companies make their way into development, fists up and ready to fight to the finish line. "A Bug's Life" vs. "Antz;" "Volcano" vs. "Dante's Peak;" "Armageddon" vs. "Deep Impact;" One concept, a million twists and a confused movie-going audience forced to figure out why there are two animated feature films in theaters about talking bugs.

The next wave of awkwardly similar flicks comes in 2012, when Relativity Media and Universal Studios will fight to the death over rival "Snow White" movies.»

If it wasn’t for the social media platform, fans at tonight’s Prince concert in La would have to debate whether that weird guy in the hat trying to climb on stage was Charlie Sheen or not. “#winning Heading to House of Blues La tonight to see a surprise show by Prince! should be Epic..!!,” Sheen tweeted this afternoon. “Was this a secret?! too late!!” Prince will actually be playing three shows in different parts of the House Of Blues tonight, the Muisc Hall at 8, the Jazz Cafe at 11, and a charity gig at the private Foundation room at 1 Am, but we wouldn’t be surprised if Charlie hits all three…it’s not like he has to go to work tomorrow.

Tonight’s festivities come after a long stretch of gigs in La, with Prince already playing 12 shows at the»

New 'Smurfs' trailer: Watch the Smurfing Smurfs engage in Smurfy Smurf hijinks here. Smurf.

“Do not be fooled by their cuteness.” “Stop saying ‘Smurf’ for everything!” Are these two quotes from July 29′s 3-D The Smurfs, or reactions to the new trailer? Answer: The former, but, still, at least a third of this screenplay must be made of the word “Smurf,” based on the teaser embedded after the jump. Yet, the little blue guys with a terribly narrow vocabulary are undeniably cute: Watch as they escape the evil Gargamel (Hank Azaria) by transporting themselves into New York City and Neil Patrick Harris’ arms. Bonus draw: There’s a laughing cat. (Maybe that’s just an attraction for me.»

'Shark Night 3D': It's about sharks! 3D sharks!! Check out the trailer!!!

Only yesterday, over at the Music Mix, we pointed out that Mike Fleiss is a man of diverse interests. He oversees the Bachelor and the Bachelorette; he has just co-directed a documentary about Ozzy Osbourne; he plays guitar in his band California Wildebeest; and he produces horror films, including the new, David R. Ellis-directed Shark Night 3D, the trailer for which just hit the Internet.

So, Mr. Fleiss, what exactly is Shark Night 3D about? “It’s about 3D sharks!” enthuses the producer. “Sharks coming at ya, in the theater!” Please do go on. “It’s a really exciting project for me.»

Insidious Comes Out Of A Coma To Hit Blu-Ray And DVD

Coming from the makers of Paranormal Activity and featuring a tagline as vaguely interesting as .It.s not the house that.s haunted,. it seemed like Insidious might be the sort of low-budget horror movie that is just good enough to rake in a little cash at the box office. Fortunately, Insidious is better than that, using the same creep-out rather than gross-out philosophy its creators are becoming known for. For more information, you can check out Mack.s review.Insidious features Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne as Josh and Renai Lambert, a couple who move from their homes after their oldest son falls into a coma-like sleep and strange, haunting events begin to occur. Insidious came into theaters in April and made over $50 million on a $1.5 million budget. So if you haven.t seen the film, you might want to check it out when it comes to Blu-ray and»

TV Vs Film: Is This Really A Golden Age Of Television & What Can Film Learn From The Small-Screen?

We don't cover much television here at The Playlist. Generally speaking, the magic of sitting in a dark room with a big-ass screen trumps the home experience every time. But TV news is starting to bleed across, thanks to the reams of big-screen stars, writers and directors who are moving into long-form TV work, and the line in terms of the product is starting to blur as well: "Mildred Pierce," for instance, barely qualifies as television, aside from its length, and its premiere airing on HBO. It was a highly cinematic experience, and arguably the best film of the year…»

Early Edition: Rufus Sewell Turns Into a Vampire; 'Dragonflight' Book Takes Wing; More

'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' just got its head vampire: Rufus Sewell will play Adam, the leader of the bloodsuckers in Fox's adaptation of the best-selling book. Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Anthony Mackie and Dominic Cooper also star in Timur Bekmambetov's 3D movie. In the film, based on Seth Graham-Smith's novel, the nation's 16th president spends much of the Civil War battling vampires rather than the Confederacy. Bekmambetov should be a nice fit for 'Vampire Hunter,' having directed 'Night Watch' and 'Day Watch,' two outrageous fantasy-thrillers. [TheWrap]

Is this 'Avatar' meets 'How to Train Your Dragon'? Copperheart Entertainment and Entertainment One are producing an adaptation of Anne McCaffrey's 'Dragonflight,' the first in the 'Dragonriders of Pern' book series, with 'Watchmen' and 'X-Men' writer David Hayter set to pen the script. Video Game Pioneer Jerry Lawson Passes Away

In the mid-1970s, the Homebrew Computer Club was just an irregular gathering of tinkerers, hobbyists and enthusiasts who met to talk shop and swap tips about how to build and work with computing hardware. These gatherings gave birth to the personal computer and two of Apple's co-founders--Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak--were members in good standing. Jobs and Wozniak sparked a home computing revolution with the Apple II but another member created an altogether different sort of seismic shift in the electronics world.

Jerry Lawson's name didn't wind up becoming as renowned as Jobs or Wozniak's but his accomplishments helped pave the way for video games to become a cultural force at home and in arcades. Lawson worked at Fairchild, where he led the team that created the first cartridge-based video game console. The Fairchild Channel F preceded the more famous Atari 2600, proving the viability of the nascent technology.»

Mandy Moore and Kellan Lutz Match Up in 'Love, Wedding, Marriage' Trailer

Dermot Mulroney may be better known as the star of "Zodiac," "The Wedding Date," The Family Stone" and three episodes of "Friends" (remember Gavin from Rachel's Ralph Lauren store?), but the actor is hoping you'll give him a chance behind the camera, with his new rom-com "Love, Wedding, Marriage."

The movie stars Mandy Moore and Kellen Lutz of "Twilight" fame as a married couple trying their best to keep Moore's divorcing parents (Jane Seymour and James Brolin) together. There's a ticking clock too - the newly married couple is counting down to the parent's big wedding anniversary party. Cue James Brolin taking body shots out of a 20-something's navel.

The movie doesn't appear to do anything revolutionary with the genre (making it an odd choice for Mulroney's directorial debut), but with a talented cast of legendary performers and up-and-comers, including Jessica Szohr of "Gossip Girl" and Michael Weston of "House,»

Get To Know The New Actors Up For Supporting Roles In The Dark Knight Rises

If casting news for Dark Knight Rises keeps going like this until its release in 2012, we'll probably be reading about who's in talks to play "Girl at Bar #3" pretty soon. Those names don't mean anything to you? No problem! Meet each one of them along with the character they're supposed to play after the jump. »

Ryan Reynolds' Final CGI Green Lantern Costume Revealed, Plus International Posters and Kilowog Gets a Voice

If you have ever frequented a fan-centric movie site, you'll find that the comic book movie fans ("fanboys" in the parlance) are extremely vocal when it comes to adaptations of their favorite characters. Some might call them "whiney," while others might just call them "critical," but they are definitely an opinionated bunch. Whenever there is a new actor announcement, poster, still image, video clip or trailer for a comic book movie, you can count on a percentage of the fans to decry it as a travesty and an insult to the legacy of the character, blah, blah, blah. Such is the case with DC Entertainment's latest superhero movie, Green Lantern, which has generated excitement among non-comic book aficionados—partially because of the casting of Ryan Reynolds as the lead character, Hal Jordan, but also because the movie will be at least partially set in space, with heavy sci-fi elements, including»

Bruce Campbell Says 'Evil Dead' Remake Script Is "Awesome," He Might Have A Role In It

A remake or sequel to Sam Raimi's cult favorite "The Evil Dead" has been knocking around for years now, moving in fits and starts but never really getting anywhere. Back in January, the Guardian reported that Raimi's longtime producing partner Rob Tapert said, "we're looking at a script this month. What's interesting about 'Evil Dead' is very few people saw it in the format we made it for, which is for the [movie] theater.…»

Bad Movies We Love: I Know What You Did Last Summer

The other day I was thumbing through my "Glowering Vixens of Party of Five" multiyear calendar when I realized something: I know just the mediocre slasher to prepare you for Scream 4! Or Scre4m! Or SCRE4M! Or Justin Bieber: Always Say Neve. It's I Know What You Did Last Summer, screenwriter Kevin Williamson's followup to Scream that abandoned wit, subversion, and scares, and replaced them with a slow-ass murderer in a denim Eddie Bauer jacket. ‘That’s What I Am’ Trailer – WWE’s Randy Orton Makes His Acting Debut Opposite Ed Harris

[1]A new trailer has been released for WWE Studios' That's What I Am, starring Ed Harris, Amy Madigan, Molly Parker -- and professional wrestler Randy Orton. Yup, it's that WWE. The gargantuan sports entertainment corporation has been producing features through its filmmaking arm since 2002, including The Scorpion King (as co-producers), The Marine, and last year's Legendary. That's What I Am looks like a bit of a departure from the company's earlier projects, in that it doesn't seem to feature much in the way of action or wrestling. Watch the trailer after the jump. That's What I Am stars Chase Ellison as Andy, a typical eighth grader who learns lessons about courage and tolerance when he's assigned to work with an unpopular geek (Alexander Walters). Harris plays Andy's wise, compassionate English teacher, who faces troubles of his own when he becomes the target of a potentially destructive rumor. Madigan and Parker»

Location Managers Get Tour Of Underused S.E. Los Angeles

In yet another effort to slow runaway production to other states and countries, the Location Managers Guild of America, aided by the California Film Commission, is organizing tours of areas in the southeastern part of Los Angeles County for studio location managers and producers. As reported by today’s (Wednesday) Los Angeles Times, the tour takes location-site scouts to such cities as Cerritos, Bellflower, Lakewood and Long Beach, where they can get a look at everything from bustling opera houses, to vacant department stores to homeless shelters. “There are over 90 cities within the zone … that are not recognized by the filming community and have so much to offer and have amazing locations,” said Kris Bunting, a former key assistant location manager for Dexter, who has been organizing the tours of the area. “We want to put them on the map.” While the cities may not offer the tax incentives that some states do, the Times observed, they do offer advantages such as low permit fees, low-cost parking, and communities where filmmakers, and the business they bring with them, are welcomed. »

Matthew Vaughn and Bryan Singer Talk Possible Sequels To ‘X-Men: First Class’

Usually, talking about making sequels to a film that's still about two months from release would constitute extreme over-confidence. But, usually, those movies aren't part of the X-Men franchise, a tried and true property that's already had four successful films with more currently in development. The latest one, X-Men: First Class, is scheduled for release [1] on June 3 and will serve as a prequel to all of those other films, telling the story of two very important mutants - Professor X (James McAvoy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) - as they begin to form their opinions, and factions, in the 1960s. Director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass) and producer Bryan Singer (X-Men) sat down with Total Film and once again threw around [2] some ideas for potential sequel [3] jump off points. Read what they had to say after the jump.In their discussion with Total Film [4], Vaughn compared his film to the obvious one when»

Scary Good: The 9 Best Horror Sequels

Sequels are an essential part of the horror genre. Revisiting a particular horrific scenario allows us to experience new thrills in a familiar setting -- when we watch a horror sequel, we're braver now that we know the world and its rules, making us feel more like participants in the terror rather than helpless victims.

Unfortunately, a good horror sequel is a rare thing. It's a daunting task to make a fresh experience out of a now-familiar world. But every once in a while, it works. And works wonders.

As we expect "Scream 4" to join the ranks of great horror sequels, we've compiled what we believe to be the Top 9. Feel free to add the 10th in the comments section.

(Before we begin, we'd just like to explain the distinct absence of George Romero's "Dawn of the Dead" from this list. We consider the "Dead" films to be variations on a theme,»

Friday Night Lights: The Fifth and Final Season DVD Review

One of network primetime’s greatest series closes out with an incredibly strong season.  The critically-lauded (but underwatched) Friday Night Lights takes its final bow with all the grace, eloquence and emotion that gave it such a devoted fanbase through its turbulent run at NBC (while the critics and a small group of followers adored it, the rest of the world never seemed to catch on; marketing was blamed for the show’s low numbers, and then the intelligence level of the television-watching populace was indicted, but I digress).  Friday Night Lights takes place in the fictional Dylan, Texas, an all-American town that holds nothing more sacred than the rowdy Friday night high school football games that transpire every Friday night.  But just as ER wasn’t really about hospitals, The Sopranos wasn’t really about the mob and Mad Men isn’t exactly about advertising in the 1960s, Friday Night Lights»
