Exclusive: Summit in Final Talks to Purchase Top Cow’s Crosshair; Story by Marc Silvestri

Last summer at Comic-Con, Mandeville Films and Top Cow Productions closed a deal to produce a feature film adaptation of the Top Cow comic book Crosshair.  According to the press release, “Crosshair follows a former CIA assassin turned suburban superdad who faces his most dangerous enemy ever – himself.  Justin Weller learns that he has 48 hours until a suppressed program in his brain will turn him into an unstoppable killing machine aimed at the President of the United States.  Weller races against the clock to uncover and reverse the source of his trigger.”Since that original press announcement, movement on the Crosshair film had been at a standstill.  However, I've just heard that Summit Entertainment is now in final talks to acquire the film rights and a new writer named Morgan Foehl is going to handle scripting duties. Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman (they produced The Fighter and The Muppets) will still be producing.»

Doggie Emergency! Ashley Greene Tweets For Prayers For Her Pooch

Ashley Greene‘s beloved fox terrier Marlo was rushed to the hospital yesterday after being attacked by another dog. The actress is currently in Vancouver filming Breaking Dawn but we don’t know whether or not Marlo was hurt on set. All we know is that yesterday, Ashley tweeted, “Everyone please please please pray for marlo. A dog attacked her. she’s in the hospital”.

Luckily for Marlo, it didn’t turn out to be as bad as it sounds. A couple of hours later Ashley tweeted an update that read, “Marlo is now stable. No damaged organs. She just may need surgery for damaged muscle. You guys are so amazing for the thoughts and prayer”. Marlo had to stay overnight at the vet, it seems, because Ashley was up early this morning on Twitter and wrote, “I am So excited to come home and pick up Marlo from the dr tomorrow!»

‘The Expendables 2′ Moves Forward; Sylvester Stallone Will Not Write or Direct

Even before The Expendables opened last year, we heard that a sequel was likely to happen. And a sequel still seems very much on the boards, but new info paints it as a very different project than we previously expected.Millennium Films is moving forward with the second film, but the script is by David Agosto and Ken Kaufman, rather than Sylvester Stallone. Sly also directed the first film, but the company is now looking for someone else to direct the follow-up.The La Times [1] has the info on the new script, but doesn't offer much beyond the names of the writers and the fact that Sylvester Stallone has been "meeting with directors to tackle the sequel." So we don't know why he isn't directing, or what the plans for the sequel are.As for returning and/or new cast members, we'll have to wait. Arnold Schwarzenegger could now take a bigger role,»

Trent Reznor Confirms 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Scoring Duties, Cameo

2011 is the year of Trent Reznor.

2010 was a warm up -- the Nine Inch Nails front man came out of nowhere to collaborate with Atticus Ross on the soundtrack for David Fincher's "The Social Network," but now he's hitting the big time.

Reznor posted on the official Nin forums that he has officially signed on for another project: the alternative history action movie "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter." This all comes in the wake of Reznor picking up the Oscar for Best Original Score and signing on for Fincher's next film, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" set to hit theaters at the end of this year.

The musician was pursued by "Abraham Lincoln" director Timur Bekmambetov, who is, according to Reznor, "an interesting and very talented director that caught my attention with his film "Night Watch' " In between being enamored by one another's work, Reznor will also»

How Video Games Might Look in the Future

Video game console manufacturers generally wait half a decade before they begin to abandon their old wares, hustle a shiny new product and empty your bank account. There were 5 years between Nintendo 64's launch in 1996 and Gamecube in 2001. 4 between Xbox in 2001 and Xbox 360 in 2005. However, a bum economy and peripherals like Kinect and Move have extended the current generation to 6 years and counting. Mum was the word until last week.

At the 2011 Game Developer's Conference, publisher/developer Epic Games ("Gears of War 3," "Bulletstorm") held a behind closed doors session with the industry elite to screen the Unreal 3 Engine.

A game engine is like a car engine. It's the central powerhouse that produces, in a game's case, the beefy graphics. We've seen Unreal Engine 3 before. It made a splash powering the original "Gears of War" in 2006. But this is the latest and possibly the most significant update.

The Marines Deploy in New Clip from Battle: Los Angeles

The last preview clip released from director Jonathan Liebesman's (The Killing Room) new sci-fi movie, Battle: Los Angeles, showed Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz's (Aaron Eckhart) squad of Marines venturing beneath the streets of L.A. to engage the aliens bent on exterminating humanity and stripping our planet of its resources in up-close-and-personal combat. Now, a new preview clip has been released that pulls back and shows the alien invasion on a much grander scale, as Nantz and his Marines are deployed to the war-ravaged California coast.

"Black Death" Asks Sharp Questions with Some Blunt Instruments

A few months back I was sitting in a screening of “Centurion,” and found myself irked in an entirely unexpected way. I was uncomfortable with the portrayal of the Picts, the warrior people north of Hadrian’s Wall, as so incredibly barbaric and uncivilized. Immediately I was confused; can a film be ethnically problematic at the expense a people who have not existed for roughly a millennium? For all cultural intents and purposes in the 21st century, the Picts might as well be imaginary, like their equally blue compatriots in “Avatar.” Yet it was clear that "Centurion" had something to say…»

Jeffrey Donovan And Miles Fisher Join Growing 'J. Edgar' Cast

If the news of a Clint Eastwood-directed biopic about the life of controversial FBI director J. Edgar Hoover weren't intriguing enough as is, the casting surrounding it certainly has been.

With Leonardo DiCaprio in the titular role, there's a bevy of equally exciting talent on board including Judi Dench in an undisclosed role, Naomi Watts as Hoover's secretary Helen Gandy, Josh Lucas as Charles Lindbergh, Ed Westwick as FBI operative Agent Smith and "The Social Network" breakout star Armie Hammer playing FBI-official Tyde Dolson.

Now, two more names have joined the thrilling project. According to Deadline, Jeffrey Donovan and Miles Fisher are the latest actors locked in for "J. Edgar."

Donovan, best known for his work on the USA television series "Burn Notice," landed the pivotal role of Robert F. Kennedy, while the up-and-coming Fisher will play Agent Garrison, an FBI worker who interviews Hoover.

Sinister New Clips from Limitless

So far, the trailers and preview clips that have been released to promote director Neil Burger's (The Illusionist) upcoming sci-fi thriller, Limitless, have pretty much just focused on the rags-to-riches story of how struggling writer Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper) turned his life around by ingesting a wonder-drug called Nzt given to him by his friend, Vernon (Johnny Whitworth). Bill Hader Says Andy Samberg, Donald Glover, Connie Britton, and More are Attached to The Hand Job – Updated

Steve recently spoke with actor and writer Bill Hader about his upcoming projects.  One movie he might try to shoot while he's on hiatus from Saturday Night Live is his wife's Maggie Carey's script, The Hand Job.  The script landed on the 2009 Black List (a list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood) and we reported back in October that Aubrey Plaza was attached to play the lead role of a 17-year-old who wants to learn about various sexual activities before she goes to college.  Hader says that he, Andy Samberg, Donald Glover, Connie Britton, Alia Shawkat, Mae Whitman, and Johnny Simmons are attached to co-star, and if that cast doesn't make you excited, then you must not recognize these actors by name.  You should work on that.Hit the jump for what Hader told Steve about the project as well as a more dramatic film he may do»

Eat My Shorts: 10 Irish Films for St. Patrick's Day

Eat My Shorts is a bi-weekly column that showcases and reviews short films.

It's more than a week until St. Patrick's Day, but that means you have plenty of time to watch all 10 of the Irish short films I've curated for you here. Actually, some of them, specifically the two oldies, are only Irish-themed but still appropriate to the holiday. So get your green on and enjoy.

First, a word about Irish shorts: Partly thanks to the Irish Film Board's interest in shorts (they just announced a new animated short funding grant) but in general due a strong national cinema overall, the past decade has seen a great surge of quality shorts from Ireland, a number of which have been nominated for Oscars. This year's contender, 'The Crush,' may have been my least favorite in its group, but it has its charms and I was»

Julianne Moore To Play Sarah Palin In HBO’s Game Change

We see the resemblance, but can she play folksy? Entertainment Weekly reports that four-time Oscar nominee Julianne Moore has signed up to play Sarah Palin in HBO’s upcoming adaptation of Game Change, Mark Halperin and John Heilemann‘s best-selling behind-the-scenes account of the 2008 Presidential election. The film will be directed by Jay Roach, who also made the 2000-election film Recount for the network (he also directed the Austin Powers movies). Hey, didn’t they forget to make one about John Kerry‘s 2004 run? Matthew Modine‘s agent is still waiting for that call!

While Recount avoided showing us the nominees and stuck to the campaign managers on the sidelines, the signing of Moore suggests we should expect some big names to play the big politicians involved. Will Mickey Rooney crawl out for John McCain? Tim Meadows for Barack Obama? Or will they go for Academy-level caliber, like Robert Duvall and Will Smith?»

‘Things Fall Apart’ Trailer

Last year Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson took the low road to being taken seriously as an actor. No, not acting! That would be taking the high road. He lost a hell of a lot of weight and shaved his head to play a college football player stricken by cancer. The movie is Things Fall Apart, directed by and c0-starring Mario Van Peebles. Now there is an 'unofficial' trailer for the film, which looks like no more than a rough sales trailer. But even the best trailer ever cut might not be able to make this look like anything but an unintentional howler. I understand that 50's massive wig in the early scenes is there to make his post-illness visage more stark, but it is also the first of many things that look wildly out of place. The Room's Tommy Wiseau might have come up with a more convincing»

Jason Segel is also in the mix as a gym teacher who has the hots for Diaz's character. Pacific Rim Is Officially On

Yesterday brought the unfortunate news that Guillermo del Toro has hit another roadblock in his mission to get Hp Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness on to the screen. But Lovecraft’s loss is Legendary Pictures’ gain, as the project that the company was trying to lure him for, monster movie Pacific Rim, is now officially his next project. Carla Gugino and Sebastian Gutierrez's Life of "Luxx"-ury

There are many filmmakers who sound nothing like the films they make. Sebastian Gutierrez is not one of them. Within seconds of opening his mouth, a flood of words escape in all directions, all hurdling towards some greater point. This has served the writer/director well on two fronts - the first being his recent run of films, beginning with 2009's "Women in Trouble" and eventually its sequel "Elektra Luxx," that sprint on the colorful flourishes of its aesthetic and banter, if not the wild tonal shifts from slapstick comedy to musical numbers to melodrama that make the fact that their main characters are porn stars seem tame by comparison. Gutierrez's way with words also helped him out of a jam when a projection problem at last year's SXSW premiere of "Elektra Luxx" resulted in one of the most memorable moments I've ever experienced at a film festival after he»

A Guardian team has been dispatched to Austin to wrangle with the best of the fest. We got the ball rolling today with a clip from The Rime of the Modern Mariner, Mark Donne's fond portrait of London's docks and Britain's declining shipping industry, narrated by Carl Barвt of Libertines fame. Other festival highlights include Duncan Jones's new movie Source Code, starring Jake Gyllenhaal as a soldier who must repeatedly relive the last eight minutes of a train passenger's life, and Jodie Foster's The Beaver, about a troubled hand puppet who finds himself on the end of Mel Gibson.»

Is This the Most Disturbing Celebrity Picture of 2011?

Here at Movieline HQ, the disturbing publicity still is one of our favorite things, if only because each one is like a snowflake -- original, simple-yet-complex, and oddly transfixing. The disturbing celebrity picture however? The exact opposite -- those are just plain scary. A calm stroll through the pages of Getty Images earlier this morning unearthed this frightening gem. Only the strong of will are advised to click ahead. The rest, well, maybe think of saving yourselves.»

'Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 1" Becomes The Top Ranking 'Potter' Film Internationally

Like a fine wine, the "Harry Potter" movies only get richer with age. It's no surprise, then, that "Deathly Hallows" is poised to become the richest of them all.

On Wednesday, Warner Bros. announced that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" has passed "Sorcerer's Stone" to become the top-grossing "Potter" film on an international level. The first half of the "Harry Potter" finale has earned $657.24 million in foreign markets, just barely edging out the "Sorcerer's Stone" total of $657 million.

“It’s tremendously gratifying to reach this benchmark as we enter the final stretch of this remarkable journey,” said Jeff Robinov, President of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, in an official statement. “We share this achievement with Jo Rowling, whose books are the foundation of this rich and vibrant world, as well as the talented people who brought her vision to life on the screen.”

Review: Certified Copy Offers Juliette Binoche in (Gasp!) Kiarostami Lite

Certified Copy, the title of writer/director Abbas Kiarostami's latest film, comes from the name of a book-length essay by one of its leads, lecturer and art historian James Miller (William Shimell). And, like much of the Iranian filmmaker's work, the believable observations are present from the very start; when Miller enters a room to begin a speech, the place is about two-thirds full. Miller plows ahead the distracted assertion of a man used to holding his own before crowds -- his voice fills the room with a sueded elegance. But coming after his game (and game-playing), 2008 diversion, Shirin, Certified Copy is something unique to Kiarostami's career, bringing to mind an adjective I never thought I'd append to him: adorable.»

The 9 Best Alien Invasion Movies

We're not alone, are we? It's fun to believe that we're not -- that somewhere, out there amongst the stars, there's intelligent life. Intelligent life with giant laser cannons and plans of domination.

For some people, the idea of an alien invasion is a terrifying nightmare. For others, it's a dream come true -- it would be proof that aliens actually exist, and we'd get to fight them with helicopters and laptop computers!

Alien invasion movies bring those dreams and nightmares down to Earth. With "Battle: Los Angeles" invading theaters, we take a look at some of the best times we've been "visited."

9. 'Independence Day' (1996)

The "ID4" teaser trailer featured the White House getting blown to smithereens by an alien laser cannon. Summer movie audiences didn't need much more than that to get them to pay for a ticket. "Independence Day" was tons of fun, a pop-art depiction»

Neil Gaiman to Write Big-Budget Adaptation of Chinese Novel Journey To The West

Acclaimed writer Neil Gaiman (The Sandman) has signed on to write the script for a trilogy of 3D big-budget films based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. The story centers on the misadventures of a Buddhist monk as he makes a pilgrimage from China to India.  Gaiman and producer Zhang Jizhong recently consulted with James Cameron on how to translate the 2,000 page novel into a trilogy.  Said Gaiman:“We have to do what Peter Jackson did with Lord of The Rings. We have to make it filmic, non-episodic. This story is in the DNA of 1.5 billion people.”According to THR, Gaiman will write "an outline over the next month that will attract enough investment to enable Zhang to hire the right director, the right Western and Chinese cast and the right team of computer animators to give the project a flight round the world."  Hit the jump for more on the project.»

Ke$ha Caught “Nearly Fornicating” At Rihanna Concert, Never Disappoints

In a grocery store. In an O.R. In a salt mine 3,500 feet beneath the earth’s surface: Ke$ha doesn’t care where she is when she wants to get her freak on. Listening to Rihanna is, of course, a natural setting for human love making, but when Ke$ha hooked up with DJ Calvin Harris at Rihanna’s concert Tuesday, they were in a Melbourne arena filled with thousands of screaming fans. That actually sounds pretty encouraging! “They were getting right into it,” a source reported to the Melbourne Herald Sun. “They were practically fornicating. They were all over each other and didn’t care who was watching.” Um, have you ever heard “Only Girl In The World”? Who can blame her? That’s all we’re saying.

Harris, who’s worked with bands like The Ting Tings, is currently spinning for Rihanna’s Last Girl on Earth tour,»

'Passion Play' With Mickey Rourke & Megan Fox Not Surprisingly Going Straight-To-dvd

To put it quite simply: "Passion Play," starring Mickey Rourke and Megan Fox, was the worst film we saw at Tiff last year (though Dustin Lance Black's "What's Wrong With Virginia" comes a close second). Our man on the ground called it "a cliche-riddled, risible and utterly painful experience that boasts hallmark sentiments and TV movie-of-the-week sensibilities mixed in a disastrous attempt to make a love story about unearned redemption." And most critics agreed with that sentiment. It was the directorial debut of screenwriter Mitch Glazer and it's sure to be his last time behind the camera for a long,…»

Director Mathew Vaughn Compares X-Men: First Class to Batman Begins

Once again, director Matthew Vaughn's upcoming comic book adaptation X-Men: First Class is dominating the news, with a new still image and two teaser posters that look like they were created in Photoshop in about three minutes.

Also getting in on the First Class media blitz is IGN, who visited the First Class set and heard Vaughn compare his X-Men prequel to 2005's Batman Begins during a shoot break.

This is going to be very different. What I'm doing no one has done in superhero films. It's James Bond, it's a political thriller and it's an X-Men movie. It's not like the other X-Men movies which I think is important. I think they need to sort of take on a new... you know, what Batman Begins did for all those Batman movies? We bloody well need it. I'm not saying it's going to be as good as Batman Begins,»

Sergio Leone’s Kids Planning New Cut Of Once Upon A Time In America

Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone had a massive impact on my childhood and movie education. His Man With No Name trilogy made me fall in love with cinema. That he made Once Upon A Time in the West as well (with a script co-written by Dario Agrento) proves he deserves his place in film history alongside my own affections. He also directed a sprawling and disturbing gangster epic in the early 1980s called Once Upon A Time In America.

Leone died in 1989 but his children Andrea and Raffaella Leone have picked up the Italian rights to his gangster masterpiece and will be teaming with Bologna Cinemetheque L’Immagine Ritrovata for a restoration and re-cut. They also plan to add forty minutes of extra footage into the film. It’s already nearly four hours long in its definitive cut (the 1984 Cannes version). Leone originally envisioned his film as being seen in two parts,»

Robocop Remake Has A Writer

Darren Aronofsky's departure for pastures Wolverine, coupled with MGM's financial woes meant that, for a while there, it didn't seem like we'd be seeing officer Alex Murphy re-cyborged anytime soon. Now though, hot on the heels of Jose Padilha being targeted to direct, comes the news that Robocop has also apprehended a screenwriter, in the form of Josh Zetumer.Zetumer is quickly building a reputation for himself in Hollywood, despite the fact that, to date, none of his work has made it to the screen. He had a crack at Dune for Peter Berg, wrote a fourth Bourne before that series was steered in another direction, and his Ira spy thriller Infiltrator made the Black List and may yet happen under the aegis of Leonardo DiCaprio and his Appian Way production company. So despite a dearth of actual films, Zetumer already has a history of intelligently actiony thrillers, with»

Meet The Zombies On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is sailing swiftly towards us and today brings a pictorial treat a little different from the parade of posters, banners or Johnny Depp looking kooky. Disney has decided instead to go a little spooky, giving IGN some new concept art of the zombies – yes, we said zombies – which Cap’n Jack and co will meet in the movie.Drawn by concept artist Miles Teves, the new images promise appealingly grim zomboids that put us in mind of the ghoulish spirit pirates from the first film. And frankly, anything that reminds of the original Curse of the Black Pearl instead of the waterlogged sequels is all right by us.As for Stranger Tides’ plot, this adventure sees Jack Sparrow on a hunt for the mythical Fountain of Youth alongside friend/nemesis (frenemesis?) Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). Along the way, they fall afoul of not just Jack’s ex,»

Retro X-Men: First Class Magazine Covers, Plus an Awesome Fan-Made Title Sequence

Not only did director Matthew Vaughn's X-Men franchise prequel, X-Men: First Class, nab the cover story of this month's issue of Empire, but the British entertainment magazine gave comic book movie fans not one, not two, but three different covers featuring Marvel's Merry Mutants. Not one to be upstaged, Total Film, which also chose First Class as its cover story this month, released four covers for the movie. The standard edition cover is your typical "characters posing and looking tough" cover, but the other three are made to look like the covers of magazines published in the 1960s, the decade when First Class takes place.

Also of note, a talented X-Men fan who goes by the handle "Joe D!" made an awesome title sequence for the movie that combines images from the '60s with images of some of the actors in the movie and retro animation, all set»

Smurfy news, everyone! The Smurf-tastic new trailer for The Smurfs has just Smurfed its way online and you can Smurf it out below! This new, full promo adds little to the plot, but then, let’s face it: all you need to know is that the little blue bods somehow find their way into our world, must try to get back and avoid the evil wizard Gargamel (Hank Azaria with a wacky nose), who wants nothing more than to steal their power. Oh, and if they keep to the original cartoon’s take on the story, eat them. What it does do is showcase a few actual scenes from the movie, while giving Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays some screen time. Our verdict? Based on this, The Smurfs is keeping to the seemingly strict formula for this sort of live-action/CG character family comedy blend – a sprinkling of pop culture references,»

"Super 8" fans, we weren't kidding when we told you big things were on the way!

After several months of waiting in the dark with only a few brief glimpses at the bigger picture, Paramount Pictures has finally unveiled the first full-length trailer for "Super 8," director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg's mysterious summer throwback movie.

What was already one of the most secretive projects of the entire summer movie season is finally becoming a little bit clearer -- though, thankfully, not too clear -- as we finally have our first good look at what Abrams has in store for us when the Amblin homage arrives in theater this June.

In addition to releasing the trailer, Paramount has unveiled a detailed plot synopsis for "Super 8," confirming some previously rumored but unofficial story elements for the very first time:

"Mars Needs Moms" Shows You the Love (And Some Needless Family Values)

“Mars Needs Moms” is a fun movie. I wasn’t expecting it to be, but it is. It’s the kind of movie that doesn't strive too much to keep the parents entertained, or to keep the kids laughing with unlimited dumb jokes, but instead simply tries to tell a solid story with a positive message. It often seems like there aren't enough of those. At the same time, I was also not expecting to take issue with the setting and background of the plot, a generally innocuous part of children’s cinema. I ended up enjoying it quite a bit, but found…»

5 Reasons Alex Pettyfer Is All Wrong for 'The Hunger Games'

Alex Pettyfer is undeniably pretty. So pretty, in fact, that movie studios -- to the delight of his fans -- have been vying to cast him in roles in highly anticipated Ya fare such as Jace in "Mortal Instruments," Tom in "The Last Apprentice" and Peeta in "The Hunger Games."

But of the hot Brit's three potential roles, we're actually hoping that Pettyfer gets passed over for Peeta. There, we said it. Nothing personal, Alex, we just don't think you're right for such a critical role, especially in a movie franchise that could rival "Twilight" in terms of fan reach and box-office pull.

Sure, Pettyfer looks the part for a "Hunger Games" lead.  As anyone who has read Suzanne Collins' beloved dystopian thriller knows, Peeta Mellark is handsome and strong, with blue eyes, wavy ash-blond hair and a muscular build from years of hauling 100-pound bags of flour (he's»

Darren Aronofsky Returning to Drug World with Dark Drama ‘Intricate’

I knew it wouldn't be long before we saw Darren Aronofsky back at it again, even if it is only in a producer capacity. Which is to say that "Monogamy," a new indie starring Rashida Jones and Chris Messina, takes the dramatic potential of the sort of romantic love explored in "Blue Valentine" and drags it into new, insanely depressing depths. Looked at another way, though, "Monogamy" is simply an unsparing and utterly truthful look at a couple in, and sometimes out, of love, as difficult as that may be to watch.

Making it all the more difficult is the fact that, off-screen, Jones and Messina are actually friends. "I was nervous, because she went to high school with my girlfriend," Messina told MTV News of Jones. "She would come over to my apartment and play with my kids. That's how I knew Rashida. When we first decided to do this together, I was a bit scared. Not only making out,»

Sexy Sax Player Can't Stop Wowing Crowds With George Michael

This may not be the most news worthy item you'll come across this friday, but it's sure to be the most careless. Apparently some of us missed these two pranksters saxing up La the first time this exquisite urge captured on video made the rounds. I've never liked George Michael's "Careless Whisper" more than I do right now.

It seems this gig inspired this SNL skit too. Dig it, "I feel so unsure, as I take your hand and lead you to the dance floor. As the music dies, something in your eyes calls to mind the silver screen, and all its sad good-byes."

The "Insidious" World of James Wan and Leigh Whannell

Towards the end of our interview -- the first at the IFC Crossroads House at South By Southwest 2011 -- I chided director James Wan and writer/actor Leigh Whannell for scarring me for life with their new film "Insidious." "You're welcome," Whannell replied with a chuckle. I like that response. Scaring people to death is Wan and Whannell's job. And these guys are good at what they do.

Wan and Whannell redefined the horror movie with the first "Saw" film, but they've taken a more old school approach with "Insidious," a haunted house thriller that's light on viscera and heavy on atmosphere. Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne star as a married couple who move into a new house that's apparently haunted by some old, angry souls. Here's our 2-part chat about the film, their first to play at SXSW. And be sure to look for my review of "Insidious" tomorrow right here on IFC.»

P. David Ebersole’S “Hit So Hard”

Screening Times: Tuesday March 15th, 9:15pm (Alamo Ritz 1), Friday march 18th, 7:00pm (Vimeo Theater)

A veteran director and producer of cable television (Wicked Wicked Games, Desire), P. David Ebersole’s rock doc Hit So Hard is a typical booze-and-drug-filled profile of his friend and collaborator Patty Schemel, the original drummer for the seminal grunge band Hole, who fell on hard times after the always controversial rock band’s heyday.

Filmmaker: How did you first conceive of Hit So Hard?

Ebersole: My friend Patty Schemel brought me a gold box, filled with 40-plus hours of never-before-seen video footage from when she was on tour with her band Hole. She shot the tape on Hi-8 and was afraid it would disintegrate soon, so she came asking for advice about how to best preserve it. Soon, the two of us were transferring the tapes and watching the footage together. Patty, a great raconteur,»

Anne Buford’S “Elevate”

Screening Times:  Sunday March 13th, 4:30pm (Vimeo Theater), Tuesday march 15th, 10:00pm (Alamo Lamar C), Thursday March 17th, 6:00pm (Rollins Theatre)

Half a decade in the making, Anne Buford’s Elevate chronicles how a group of gifted West African basketball players respond as they are feverishly recruited by American schools on the promise of their skills on the hardwood, and how coping with the adjustment to American life may be the toughest thing of all.

Filmmaker: How did you first hear of the West African basketball players whose stories Elevate chronicles?

Buford: In the Fall of 2004, Rc Buford, who besides being my big brother is the Gm of the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs, asked me to say hello and take donuts to the African Junior National team, who were on the New York City stop of their Us tour. When I met the team — from various African countries,»

Teaser Trailer Arrives For Conan The Barbarian

You only have to remember Marcus Nispel has directed this fantasy flick to realise it probably won’t be very good. The German helmer hasn’t made an impressive film yet. Will Conan The Barbarian change all that? The answer is: who the hell knows!

Check out the new teaser trailer complete with “sixty cigarettes a-day man voiceover” and see what you think. As it’s a teaser there’s not much footage from the finished production – unless it features plenty of scenes of people dancing around in smoke, you know, like barbarians do according to Nispel’s imagination. Telly actor Jason Momoa takes on the role that helped make Arnie Schwarzenegger a “moo-vie star” and to be honest, his acting looks just as dodgy.

Conan is not without its merits. Ron Perlman is in it alongside Rose McGowan, so it’s not all bad. Stephen Lang from Avatar is playing the villain Khalar Zym.»

“Yelling To The Sky” Producer Billy Mulligan, Part One

Producer Billy Mulligan, who is attending SXSW with Victoria Mahoney’s Yelling to the Sky, is filing a series of guest blog posts. Here’s the first.

I’ve just touched down on Texas soil, a first for this pale-skinned, mid-winter-hibernating New Yorker. It’s a truly wonderful thing to be here conveying my experiences promoting a film I produced that is extremely close to my heart. The film is Yelling to the Sky, a narrative feature born from the rib of debut writer/director/producer, Victoria Mahoney. The occasion is our North American premiere this weekend in the Spotlight section of SXSW.

We have flown down to Austin right off the heels of our World Premiere in Competition at last month’s Berlin Film Festival. Even before Yelling was in the can, we put a lot of weight into the conversation about which festivals, if we were fortunate enough to be accepted,»

Is Jennifer Lawrence Set To Star In Hunger Games Movie?

You read the tea leaves, you absorbed our suggestions, but it seems like Hunger Games director Gary Ross may have found his Katniss Everdeen in recent Academy Award-nominee Jennifer Lawrence. Deadline is reporting that Lawrence has emerged as the front runner for the underfed lead role of the dystopian film franchise, leaping ahead of other contenders like True Grit's Hailee Steinfeld, Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin and Sucker Punch's Emily Browning. Talks are reportedly set to begin next week, but take this casting news with a grain of salt, though: remember when we all thought Jamie Bell had Spider-Man all locked up? [Deadline]»

Mark Ruffalo To Play Jazz Pianist Joe Albany In 'Low Down'

A lot of people did a double take when longtime indie stalwart Mark Ruffalo signed on to play The Hulk in "The Avengers" last year. Had the thespian turned his back on his indie roots? Was this a new, more mainstream geared Ruffalo that was emerging? Nah, didn't think so. Once Ruffalo is done going green this summer, he'll slide back into a smaller pic and one that once again finds the actor dipping his toes in new water. Variety reports that Ruffalo will portray jazz pianist Joe Albany in the biopic "Low Down." Based on his daughter Amy Albany's…»

Sylvester Stallone Directing The Expendables 2 After All?

While a sequel to Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables has been in the works for a while, there’ve been quite a few rumors surrounding the project. Last month, it was reported that although Stallone would be returning in The Expendables 2 as an actor, he would not be directing the flick this time around. He also passed over scripting duties to Ken Kaufman (Space Cowboys) and David Agosto. Well, now it’s being reported that Stallone may in fact direct the follow-up after all.The website Expendables Premiere (via Screen Rant) is reporting that Lionsgate and Maple Pictures have revealed that Stallone will be returning to the director’s chair for the film. However, this information has yet to be confirmed and we haven’t heard anything from Lionsgate or Maple Pictures at this time, so this could very well be one more rumor about the project. Hopefully we'll know more soon.»

Jessica Alba Is A Little Manson, A Little Monroe For Vogue Italia

It’s scary how hot Jessica Alba’s Vogue Italia photos are, albeit in a high-school-goth-circa-1996 sort of way. This the kind of wardrobe and dye job we’d dream about in the sixth grade, when Marilyn Manson was cool but we were too intimated to go into Hot Topic alone. “My own style is probably a mixture of high and low. I’m definitely into sort of layering and I like mystery so I don’t put it all out there,” the star of the upcoming An Invisible Sign told the magazine. “I play dress up for a living — for photo shoots and for working and movies or whatnot — I sort of wear more revealing things that show my body. But in life I like things that have a little bit more mystery. I like things that are elegant and chic, but then a little rock-and-roll.” If by “rock-and-roll,»

SXSW: Todd Phillips Lambastes Warner Bros. Over Hangover Uncut Edits: 'That Won't Happen Again'

In conversation with Movieline's Elvis Mitchell Friday at SXSW, director Todd Phillips talked all things Todd Phillips: His fascination with awkward male relationships, the status of The Hangover 2, how heartbroken he was when his HBO documentary Frat House was shelved by a lawsuit, and wise words he once received from James Cameron. And somewhere between sharing revelations from Due Date (a test of how forgiving an audience could be of Robert Downey Jr.) and expressing love for both Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen (they're both "my boys"), Phillips accused Warner Bros. of violating DGA rules in the name of milking the home-video market. »

Update – Batch Of Images From Terrence Malick’s The Tree Of Life

The world will finally be seeing Terrence Malick’s long-awaited The Tree Of Life when it opens in May and it’s about effing time too. A batch of new stills from the movie have appeared as if by magic through a Russian site (KinoPoisk) and they show off the soft-focus beauty of the cinematography as well as moments from the film and its stars Brad Pitt and Sean Penn.

Oh and did you know there’s dinosaurs in this film? Yeah, bet you never thought that. Whether they’ve made the final cut or not remains to be seen, but special effects scenes were shot along with moments of the birth of time and being. Malick is such a Heideggerian!

You can also check out the trailer here. This is going to be a special film.

'The City Dark' SXSW Review: Time to Get Scared of the Light

Filed under: Documentaries, Reviews, SXSW Film Festival, Cinematical

I can't recall if I read Michael Pollan first or saw Aaron Woolf's 'King Corn' first. The two experiences occurred roughly the same time (in mid 2007). But either way I'm sure that I learned a lot about the food industry from the latter (which features Pollan as a talking head). And as an ignorant eater unaware that corn dominates our diet and may be ruining the American farm system through its industrialization, I appreciated the way its information was filtered through the investigatory curiosity of two college buddies, who learned right alongside the viewer.

Now one of those inquisitive guys, Ian Cheney, who is also credited as a writer and producer of 'King Corn,' has a new directorial effort (following his 2008 debut, 'The Greening of Southie'), which is a similar sort of personal journey that looks into another sort of taken-for-granted subject.»

SXSW 2011: Six Films That Made it Big

Film festivals aren't just the place for indie flicks with niche audience appeal.  Sometimes they can be a launching pad for modern genre classics.  In celebration of SXSW, we've picked some of our favorite festival flicks that have gone gangbusters in general release.GraceA young woman insists on carrying her fetus to term, even though it died at seven months gestation in the same car crash that killed her husband.  "Miraculously," when the child is born, she starts to breathe and cry.  That miracle is short-lived when baby Grace starts to attract flies and can only consume human blood.  This quiet film doesn't rely on big special effects or crazy deaths for its horror;»

Exclusive: Edgar Wright Has Been Asked to Direct an Episode of The Walking Dead Season 2

Yesterday at SXSW, Scott Wampler (our Austin contributing writer) got to sit down with director Joe Cornish, Edgar Wright and Nick Frost to talk about Cornish's first feature film, Attack The Block (which played huge during its midnight premiere last night).  While we'll have the whole interview online later today, one of the gems that came out of their conversation is that Frank Darabont has asked Wright to direct an episode of The Walking Dead season two!  While Wright made it sound like he probably won't do it, it's still awesome to think that one of my favorite directors might helm an episode of the hugely popular AMC show.  For exactly what he said, hit the jump:Even though Wright says that, "I really enjoyed the first season, and I wouldn't wanna be the guy that comes in and fucks it up," it's hard to think that he could do such a thing.»

"The Greatest Movie Ever Sold," Reviewed

How did we ever live before TiVo and DVR? I honestly don't remember. I seem to vaguely recall talking to people more. It was horrible.

TiVo and DVR have given us the freedom to control our tevision experience: to record and save our favorite shows or fast-forward through the stuff we don't want to watch. That freedom, though, is such a complicated thing. We certainly don't need more marketing in our cluttered lives, but that marketing pays for most of the content on television and the Internet. And as TiVo and DVR have made commercials easier to avoid on television, people have become more resistant to traditional advertising in all cultural contexts. Again, not a terrible thing... except for the people who make their money by creating content for websites that make their money selling advertising. If you won't look at the ads, the site can't sell the ads. If they can't sell the ads,»

Chickens, Vinyl And Lost & Found In Austin: Jeanie Finlay At SXSW

My name is Jeanie Finlay and I’m an artist and filmmaker from the U.K. I’m in Austin for my very first SXSW and the world premiere of the feature documentary Sound it Out which I produced and directed.

Sound it Out is a documentary portrait of the very last record shop in Stockton-on-Tees in Teesside, my home town. It’s a small shop in a small town. It’s a film about men and music and passion and the North East of England. It’s the most personal film I’ve ever made for the lowest budget and I’m frankly still a bit gobsmacked that my Diy microbudget film with a big heart will be premiering later on today at SXSW.

It was an adventure just getting here — one lost (and then found again) passport at Lax, one missed flight, one unscheduled evening in La, two»
