'Conan O'Brien Can't Stop' SXSW Review: So Funny You'll Need to See it Twice

Filed under: Documentaries, Reviews, SXSW Film Festival, Cinematical

Happy St. Patrick's Day. Fittingly, here is a review of a film about a guy of Irish descent directed by the guy who directed 'Leprechaun 2.'

One of the highlights of the SXSW film festival is seeing a sold out comedy at the Paramount Theater. 1200 people laughing together is just a wonderful thing. Even better, for me, though, is seeing so many people in one room together for a documentary, as was the case for 'Conan O'Brien Can't Stop.' It's one of a few docs playing twice in such a big room this week, and (nothing against the also-great 'The Interrupters' and 'Senna') surely it's the most popular of the three.

Part of the reason for that popularity is obviously O'Brien's notoriety, and the promise of laughs is certainly a factor, as well. If I had to complain about anything,»

"Win Win" Reigns Supreme at SXSW 2011

As my review probably made clear, "Win Win" is one of my very favorite films at this year's South by Southwest Film Festival. So I was really excited to talk to its co-writer/director Thomas McCarthy and stars Paul Giamatti, Amy Ryan, and especially Alex Shaffer, the New Jersey state wrestling champion who answered an open casting call and got the role of Kyle, a troubled teen and gifted wrestler who changes the lives of Giamatti's Mike and Ryan's Jackie. I haven't seen Shaffter interviewed before and he's quite a character. I particularly got a kick out of his pick for his favorite high school movie ever made.

With Kevin Smith threatening retirement, it looks like McCarthy could become New Jersey's preeminent cinematician: "Win Win" is set in the director's hometown of New Providence, New Jersey and he previously set his debut film "The Station Agent" there as well. So I asked him about that,»
