Cameron To Adapt Showscan Process For Avatar Sequels

James Cameron appeared to be forecasting Wednesday that Douglas Trumbull’s widescreen Showscan Process will at last be accepted by Hollywood — in digital form. While he made no mention of Trumbull in an appearance before the National Association of Theater Owners convention in Las Vegas, Cameron indicated that he plans to film his upcoming Avatar sequels using a technique similar to Showscan. Trumbull, the special effects genius behind such films as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and Blade Runner, introduced Showscan in 1984 — a process using 70mm film shot at 60 frames per second (instead of the usual 24 frames) that critic Roger Ebert described at the time as “incomparably more realistic than anything I had ever seen before on a movie screen … the future of cinema.” Cameron on Wednesday suggested that that future has finally arrived. “If the 3D puts you into the picture, the higher frame rate takes the glass out of the window,” he told the exhibitors.»
