I've not seen The Hangover Part II yet but I'll bet Bridesmaids is funnier

With plum roles for women and an equal commitment to gross-out, Kristen Wiig's movie will be a great Hangover cure

If you're in the market for a fantastically dark gross-out black comedy about clueless young Americans trapped in a never-ending nightmare in south-east Asia, skip The Hangover Part II and just watch Apocalypse Now, reissued this week for the umpteenth time. I'm out of town this week so I've yet to see Hangover II, though I imagine there's a worldwide embargo on pre-release glimpses of its priceless shit jokes and fart oratorios, lest one dime of its projected mega profits be lost to piracy or to unfounded rumours of comedic inadequacy.

The latter, as it happens, has long been my biggest problem with the Todd Phillips oeuvre. My main memories of his last three R-rated comedies – Old School, The Hangover, and Due Date – are of wall-to-wall ads in the month preceding release,»

Cannes: Sundance Selects Acquires Competition Pic 'Poliss'

Cannes, France (May 21, 2011) – Sundance Selects announced today from the 2011 Cannes Film Festival that the company is acquiring all U.S. rights to writer-director and actress Maiwenn’s Poliss from Wild Bunch. Cannes Titles 'Snowtown' and 'Polisse' Find Domestic Distribution

It's a nice surprise to see a pair of films I enjoyed at Cannes find themselves domestic distribution beginning with Maiwenn's Jury Prize-winning Polisse, a film I referred to as "a fast-paced, tragic, touching, emotional and occasionally hilarious look at the French police's Child Protective Unit (Cpu)." Outside of most French film critics, I was one of the few critics to enjoy it as much as I did, but at least now there's an opportunity for stateside viewers to give it a look as Sundance Selects will be distributing it. 'Lost' One Year Later: Why The Series Finale Didn't Work

Over the past year, I have had no less than a dozen conversations with folks about the finale of "Lost" ... the cyclical beauty of that final shot, the poignant symbolism of the stained glass window (it's all about the bardo, dude), the high-minded concepts like sacrifice and interconnectedness and destiny that it espoused. I have nodded and sipped my drink politely, listened intently, perhaps even interjected occasionally. But at the end of each and every one of those conversations, I found myself more confused than I was when it began, mostly because I couldn't believe anyone actually liked the way the show ended.

So, at the risk of upsetting Damon Lindelof (something that is surprisingly easy to do), I would like to go on record as saying that the finale of "Lost" was absolutely terrible. I hated it when it first aired and now, exactly one year later, I think I hate it even more.»

Movie Pet Peeve #14: Characters Hanging Up the Phone Without Saying Goodbye

So today I'm watching the movie "Wild Things," the 1998 erotic thriller with Matt Dillon, Neve Campbell, Denise Richards and Kevin Bacon. One scene in particular caught my eye -- no, it wasn't the make-out session between Campbell and Richards. It was an otherwise innocuous phone call between three characters who shall remain nameless for reasons of spoilers. Here is the transcript of their one-sided conversation:

Character #1: Now, look. We gotta stay calm, all of us. Now since the settlement, people think I'm rich. So I'm out there spending money, doing what rich guys do. Now this cop, Duquette, he's gonna try and fuck with you. Don't let him.

Character #2: Yeah, that's easy for you to say!

Interview: Discussing Talking Dogs and 'Beginners' with Writer/Director Mike Mills

I want to start out by saying this was one of the most difficult pieces I've had to write for this site. That's because I love, love writer/director Mike Mills' new film Beginners and I really hope I do it justice with this article.

I'm not saying this because I was invited to the Focus Features junket and fed breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel. I'm saying it because Beginners is the best film I've seen this year and maybe the best film-going experience I've had since I went gaga for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World last year. That doesn't mean everyone who reads this article will love Beginners as much as I did, but if you're a film lover I doubt you'll be disappointed by Mills' cinematic confection. It's that good.

Title Changes for Former ‘John Carter of Mars,’ ‘Now’ and ‘Still I Rise’

Double Academy Award-winning director of Finding Nemo and Wall-e, Andrew Stanton, is currently working on his first foray into live action, an adaptation of the classic sci-fi fantasy novel John Carter of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs [1]. Two more have joined the cast of HBO’s biopic of legendary record producer-turned-lady-murderer Phil Spector. Bette Midler and Jeffrey Tambor have joined the cast of the film, written and directed by David Mamet. Al Pacino was previously cast as Spector himself in the flick that will focus on Spector’s later years, specifically the 2003 trial where he was convicted of second-degree murder for shooting a struggling actress in his mansion.The Wrap reports that Midler will play Linda Kenney Baden, one of Spector's defense attorneys in the trial. Tambor is set to take on the role of defense attorney Bruce Cutler. Last year, Pacino won the Emmy for portraying Jack Kevorkian in the HBO drama You Don’t Know Jack, directed by Barry Levinson. Australian actor known for his roles in Strictly Ballroom and Muriel's Wedding

For many Australians, the screen persona of the character actor Bill Hunter, who has died of cancer aged 71, was the archetypal "ocker", an uncultivated Australian working man who enjoys beer, "barbies", Aussie rules football and V8 supercars. According to Phillip Noyce, who directed the oft-bearded actor in three movies and a TV miniseries: "Bill was the absolute essence of the Anglo-Irish Australian male of the 20th century. Seemingly gruff and impenetrable, he could convey the tenderness beneath the exterior."

Maybe the cuteness serves as a cognitive shortcut for games that might otherwise seem daunting. Hearing that chubby bird's whoop in "Tiny Wings" lets you know you're doing something right in an immediate fashion.

On Its Way to Glasgow, 'The Dark Knight Rises' Adds Law and Religion

Casting on The Dark Knight Rises isn't slowing up as Variety reports Brett Cullen ("Lost", Ghost Rider) and Chris Ellis (Transformers, Catch Me if You Can) have joined the cast as a judge and priest respectively. The duo obviously don't have large roles in the film and neither are necessarily household names, but their filmographies show Nolan has once again brought on actors that have an extensive body of work, not to mention I'm sure one or two members of the audience will recognize Goodwin Stanhope.

Production on the film is already underway in London and Croydon and as Scotland's Daily Record reports, it will head north to Glasgow for several scenes early next month.

A source told the Daily Record's John Dingwall, "[Director Christopher Nolan] plans to use various cities to provide a mash-up of what Gotham will look like. Glasgow was location-scouted for the last film Dark Knight, though in the end it wasn't used.»

Lars von Trier extends Cannes apology

Danish director says Nazi comments that got him banned from the Cannes film festival were 'unintelligent, ambiguous and needlessly hurtful'

While the Cannes film festival officially ended on Sunday, the Lars von Trier controversy apparently has some way left to run. The banned Danish film-maker today released another statement clarifying his comments at last Wednesday's press conference, in which he jokingly claimed that he was "a Nazi" and "understood Hitler". Von Trier now describes those remarks as "unintelligent ... and needlessly hurtful".

The director 's latest statement appears designed, in part, to distance himself from remarks made by a minister in the Iranian government, who accused the Cannes organisers of "fascist behaviour" in their decision to banish Von Trier. "Surely you remember that the Cannes festival was established with the aim of struggling against fascists," the Iranian deputy culture minister Javad Shamaqdari wrote in a letter to the festival president, Gilles Jacob.»

Ex-Universal Co-Chief David Linde Closes Deal for Reliance-Backed Company with Global Output Pacts

David Linde has finally closed his long-in-the-works film production and finance company backed by India's Reliance Entertainment, which also backs DreamWorks. Linde has lined up an all-important first-look distribution deal with his former studio, Universal, plus key foreign output deals. The new company has not yet cleared a name--Linde has been calling it Lava Bear Films.
