Gavin Hood Will Direct His Ender’S Game Script; Summit Acquires Rights to Film

Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) will direct his script for a live-action adaptation of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game for Summit Entertainment. Deadline reports that the studio has acquired U.S. rights to the film which is expected to go into production by early next year. We reported that Hood was rewriting a script by Card back in September of last year. Later, we learned that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman were acting as producers on the adaptation, a fact that no doubt helped the film land financing from Summit. With the cash cow that is The Twilight Saga soon ending for the studio, it's believed that Summit is hoping Ender's Game will compete for coveted teen box office dollars against Lionsgate's similarly targeted sci-fi adaptation, The Hunger Games.Briefly, Card's 1985 novel was based on a short story published in 1977 and is set in a future Earth that is reeling from two alien invasions.»

Jeff Bridges In Talks To Team With Ryan Reynolds In Corpse Comedy 'R.I.P.D'

Exclusive: Universal Pictures is negotiating with Jeff Bridges to star with Ryan Reynolds in the Robert Schwentke-directed supernatural comedy R.I.P.D. The film centers on a police force comprised of undead officers, based on the Peter Lenkov comic. Zach Galifianakis was going to star but exited over uncertainty of when Reynolds would be able to make the film because of the option Warner Bros holds for a sequel to Green Lantern. Bridges, who won the Oscar for Crazy Heart, is booked to star in The Seventh Son for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. He's repped by CAA and Schiff Co.»

Ken Russell is leaning on his stick outside the Pebble Beach restaurant in Barton-on-Sea, Hampshire, while his fourth wife parks the car. "Thanks for recognising me," he says as I shake his hand. It would be hard not to. Russell is wearing open-toed sandals, red trousers pulled up so far over his waist they're bearing down on his nipples and stripy shirt, while his big florid face is topped by a rage of grey hair.

Last week, Jon Savage outlined what made West Berlin so culturally fascinating 30 or so years ago: "An oasis of extremity created by the cold war … peopled with bohemians and outcasts." One thing he didn't explain was why it was peopled by those bohemians and outcasts. Enter Hooper165, who explained that Berliners were exempt from conscription to the West German army, which "triggered in the 70s and early 80s a vast youth migration from all parts of Germany into Berlin". While I've been known to be somewhat critical of the film's trailer and television spots, I have to say that I enjoy any promotional materials that play up both Ken Jeong and the monkey (not trying to be disrespectful, I truly don't know his name). Ben Kingsley Signs on for Sacha Baron Cohen's The Dictator

Ben Kingsley will join Sacha Baron Cohen in The Dictator, a Paramount comedy by Seinfeld scribes Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and Dave Mandel (and Cohen's frequent collaborator Dan Mazer) that "follows a heroic dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy never comes to the country he so lovingly oppressed." Kingsley is slated to star as one of two Middle Eastern characters who comes into play, and Jason Mantzoukas of The League is in talks for the other role. Personally, I'm still hurting from Kingsley's Oscar loss for Sexy Beast, so let's hope this unconventional story gives him the standing for a second statuette. [Variety]»

Hoodwinked Too! Hood Vs. Evil comes out during a time when unoffensive animated films just aren't good enough anymore. For the film watcher, this is a great time with the likes of Pixar and Dreamworks upping the ante, with a few dark horses here and there and some old mainstays like Disney still staking a claim. Unfortunately, Hoodwinked Too isn't a shining example of the current times. Instead, a bizarre plot, uninspired animation, and worst of all, a lack of more than a handful of laughs keep this sequel from pushing the genre forward. With Zach Galifianakis Out, Jeff Bridges Could Join Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D.

Jeff Bridges could breathe new life into R.I.P.D..

Zach Galifianakis decided to withdraw from the comic book adaptation earlier this month, just two months after joining. Based on the Darkhorse comic book by writer Peter Lenkov and artist Lucas Marangon, R.I.P.D. would follow Ryan Reynolds as a recently murdered man who agrees to work for the Rest in Peace Department (or, R.I.P.D.) for 100 years in exchange for the chance to find his killer. Bridges is in negotiations to play Reynolds' partner, an agent who looks like Rooster Cogburn (Bridges' Oscar-nominated character from True Grit but without an eye patch) and has worked for R.I.P.D. since the 1800s. The only problem may be scheduling.
